Aoraki Routes

NZ bungy stops work well in a motorhome trip if you treat them as half-day anchors, not quick roadside extras. Queenstown has the densest choice. Auckland has the North Island option, but the parking takes more thought.

March is a good planning month for this sort of day. You still get long daylight, school-holiday pressure eases, and the roads around Queenstown, Wanaka and Auckland are less frantic than January.

Top 3 NZ bungy picks

Kawarau Bridge Bungy, Queenstown region

Kawarau Bridge Bungy sits beside SH6 in the Kawarau Gorge, about 25 km from central Queenstown and 20 km from Cromwell. Allow 30 to 40 minutes from Queenstown in a motorhome, more if traffic is crawling through Frankton. It fits the Christchurch to Queenstown route, Queenstown to Wanaka motorhome drive guide, and Queenstown + Fiordland loop. The nearest easy overnight is Creeksyde Queenstown, with Arrowtown Holiday Park also useful if you want a quieter base. Onsite parking is usually the simplest of the bungy stops, though big vehicles should avoid arriving at the busiest middle of the day. It operates broadly year-round, with weather pauses. Cost sits toward the upper end of short NZ activities. Spectators and older children are fine, dogs are not a platform activity.

Nevis Bungy, Queenstown region

Nevis Bungy is the big one, but do not plan to drive your motorhome to the jump pod. You check in from Queenstown, then transfer into the Nevis Valley by specialist vehicle. Build the day around Queenstown parking, not the map pin. From Creeksyde Queenstown you can walk into town in about 15 to 20 minutes, which is easier than hunting for a long bay. This stop belongs naturally on South Island in 10 days, South Island in 14 days, and the Auckland to Queenstown one-way route. Fill fuel and groceries at Frankton if you are heading to Te Anau next. Opening runs year-round in normal conditions, but shoulder-season hours can shorten. This is not a cheap filler activity. It suits confident teens and adults who meet age and weight rules.

Auckland Bridge Bungy, Auckland region

Auckland Bridge Bungy uses the Auckland Harbour Bridge, close to Westhaven and the central city. It fits North Island in 7 days, North Island in 10 days, and any Auckland to Queenstown one-way plan before you head south. The nearest practical overnight is Takapuna Beach Holiday Park, about 8 km away but often 20 to 35 minutes in traffic. Do not expect relaxed motorhome parking beside the bridge. Stay parked at the holiday park or a legal long-vehicle bay, then use a taxi, rideshare or bus. It runs through much of the year, with wind and operational limits. Cost is around the upper middle of the NZ activity range. Kids need to meet operator rules, and pets should stay back at camp.

How to fit bungy into a route

For a South Island trip, the cleanest pattern is Wanaka to Queenstown via Crown Range Road, then bungy the next morning. The Crown Range reaches 1,121 m and is narrow in places, so a 7 m motorhome should take it slowly or use SH6 via Cromwell if the weather is poor. Kawarau is easy on the way in. Nevis is better as a Queenstown-based half day.

On a Queenstown + Fiordland loop, do your jump before SH94 to Milford Sound. Queenstown to Te Anau is about 170 km and 2.5 to 3 hours in real motorhome time, and Milford day timings are not forgiving. On North Island routes, put Auckland Bridge Bungy after pickup only if you have slept well. New Zealand drives on the left, and first-day city traffic is not the place to rush.

Practical notes — parking, cost, hours, kids and dogs

  • Parking: Kawarau is the most motorhome-friendly. Nevis and Auckland are best handled from a holiday park base. For Queenstown, read Freedom camping in Queenstown and How to park a motorhome in NZ cities before assuming a roadside spot is legal.
  • Timing: Morning slots keep the rest of the day usable. Afternoon bungy plus a long drive to Te Anau, Wanaka or Rotorua is how tired mistakes happen.
  • Cost: Bungy is a paid adventure activity, not a small entry-fee stop. Treat it like a major line in What a NZ campervan trip actually costs.
  • Licences: Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months. If your licence is not in English, carry an IDP or approved translation.
  • Kids and dogs: Spectator areas suit families better than toddlers. Jumpers must meet age, weight and health rules. Dogs are generally not suitable at jump sites or transfers.

What's worth skipping

The Ledge Bungy site above Queenstown, reached by the Skyline gondola, is worth checking only if it is operating for your dates. It has had periods off the regular bungy roster, so do not build a route around it until you confirm current hours. If you still go up Skyline, the nearest overnight remains Creeksyde Queenstown, and it fits the same Queenstown to Glenorchy drive guide or South Island in 7 days structure.

Also skip any plan that puts a jump, a supermarket run, a dump station stop and a 4-hour drive into one afternoon. Dump stations near Queenstown are useful, but do the chores the evening before.

NZ bungy jumping by motorhome — FAQ

Can I do this with a 7 m motorhome?
Yes, but choose the logistics carefully. Kawarau Bridge is the easiest with a 7 m motorhome because it sits on SH6 and has onsite visitor parking. Nevis is fine if you park in Queenstown and use the operator transfer. Auckland Bridge Bungy is the trickiest because central Auckland parking is tight. Stay at Takapuna Beach Holiday Park or another legal base, then use local transport.
Are these year-round or summer-only?
Kawarau, Nevis and Auckland Bridge Bungy generally operate across the year, but they are not immune to wind, weather, maintenance days or shorter shoulder-season hours. March and April are good planning months because daylight is still useful and peak summer pressure has eased. Winter can work in Queenstown, but leave more buffer for icy mornings, chain requirements on alpine roads and slower motorhome driving.
Which bungy stops are kid-friendly?
Kawarau is the most family-friendly spectator stop because the viewing is straightforward and you can keep the motorhome nearby. Auckland can work for older children, but the city transfer needs planning. Nevis is more of an older-teen and adult day because of the remote transfer and intensity. For jumpers, always check current age, weight and health rules. Dogs are not a good match for bungy sites.
