Aoraki Routes

NZ glacier trips sound simple until you put them into a motorhome day. Franz Josef and Fox sit on SH6 on the West Coast. Tasman Glacier sits off SH80 in the Mount Cook / Aoraki region. Weather, parking, fuel and overnight stops decide more than the brochure does.

Top 3 picks

Franz Josef Glacier, West Coast

Franz Josef Glacier is the most straightforward NZ glacier stop on the Greymouth to Franz Josef route and South Island in 14 days. Greymouth to Franz Josef is 175 km, usually 2.5 to 3 hours in a motorhome. Stay at Franz Josef TOP 10 Holiday Park or Rainforest Retreat Holiday Park. Heli-hikes sit toward the upper end of the NZ activity-cost range, while the valley viewpoints are free. Flights run year-round but are heavily weather-dependent, with shoulder-season hours shorter. Scenic flights suit many families. Heli-hikes usually have age, weight and boot-size limits. Dogs are not suitable in the national park or aircraft.

Fox Glacier, West Coast

Fox Glacier is 25 km south of Franz Josef, about 30 minutes on SH6, and fits neatly on the Franz Josef to Fox Glacier route before the long Fox Glacier to Wanaka day. Overnight at Fox Glacier Holiday Park. The township is smaller, so fuel and groceries need a little more planning. Helicopter access is the main glacier experience here, with cost usually around the middle to upper activity range. Viewpoint walks change with slips and river conditions, so check DOC locally. Flights operate year-round when weather allows. Children may join scenic flights, but heli-hiking rules are stricter. Dogs are a poor fit.

Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook / Aoraki

Tasman Glacier is the better glacier stop if your route is Christchurch to Queenstown, Wanaka to Mount Cook or Queenstown to Mount Cook. Wanaka to Mount Cook is about 210 km and 3 to 3.5 hours via SH8, Lindis Pass at 965 m, and SH80. Stay at White Horse Hill Campground (DOC) or Glentanner Park Centre. The Tasman Glacier View Track is free and daylight-access year-round. Glacier heli or ski-plane trips cost more and depend on cloud and wind. This area works well for kids if you keep the walk short. Dogs are not allowed in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.

How to fit them into a route

Do not try to collect every glacier in one rushed week. For South Island in 10 days, choose either the West Coast pair or Tasman Glacier, not all three. A sensible West Coast arc is Greymouth to Franz Josef, one night, then Fox Glacier to Wanaka, 260 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours over Haast Pass at 564 m. For a clearer weather backup, South Island in 14 days gives you two nights around Franz Josef or Fox.

March is the month I like for this theme. Roads are calmer than January, daylight is still useful, and glacier operators are usually running full or near-full schedules. Cross-check this with Shoulder seasons (March-May, September-November) and Fuel economy and prices in NZ before you build the day.

Practical notes — cost, opening hours, kid-friendly, dog-friendly

Book glacier flying for the first morning you are in town, not the last hour before you leave. If weather cancels, you still have a second chance or time for a free viewpoint walk. Motorhome parking is usually manageable in the glacier townships, but arrive early. A 6 to 7 m motorhome is fine on SH6 and SH80. Longer vehicles just need more patience at tight fuel stops and scenic pull-outs.

NZ drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months; bring an IDP if your licence is not in English. Minimum hire age varies from 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class. If this is your first large vehicle, read First time driving a motorhome before tackling the West Coast in heavy rain.

What's worth skipping

Skip a same-day glacier dash from Queenstown to Franz Josef. It is more than 350 km each way, six hours plus in real conditions, and SH6 over Haast Pass deserves daylight and a rested driver. Also skip paying for multiple glacier flights unless glaciers are the main point of your trip. One strong heli experience plus one free viewpoint usually gives a better day structure, more budget control and fewer weather disappointments.

NZ glacier helicopter / hike options — FAQ

Can I do this with a 7 m motorhome?
Yes. A 7 m motorhome is workable for Franz Josef, Fox Glacier and Tasman Glacier if you drive conservatively and park early. SH6 on the West Coast is sealed but narrow in places, with one-lane bridges and wet-road spray. SH80 into Aoraki/Mount Cook is easier, though exposed in wind. Do not use tiny roadside pull-outs if the rear of the vehicle will sit close to the lane.
Are these year-round or summer-only?
The glacier townships and main viewpoint walks are generally year-round, subject to DOC closures after slips, flooding or ice risk. Helicopter and ski-plane trips also operate year-round, but only when cloud, wind and landing conditions allow. Summer brings longer operating hours and more travellers. March and April often give a good balance. In winter, allow more daylight margin and check snow-chain advice for alpine approach roads.
Which ones are kid-friendly?
Tasman Glacier View Track is the easiest family option if the weather is clear and children can manage steps and an exposed lookout. Franz Josef and Fox scenic flights can suit children, but each operator sets age, weight and seating rules. Heli-hikes are less flexible because of crampons, boots and safety briefings. Dogs are generally not suitable for these glacier days, especially inside national park boundaries or near aircraft operations.
