NZ surf beaches by motorhome, route by route
nz surfing
NZ surfing is not one neat beach list. The useful question is where a motorhome can park, where a beginner can hire a board, and where you can sleep legally after rinsing sand out of the van.
This guide links surf stops to the North Island in 10 days, North to South in 21 days, Auckland to Piha drive and the Southern Scenic Route, with Auckland, Gisborne and Dunedin logistics kept practical. February has the warmest water and longest evenings, but March is often easier for campsites.

Top 5 picks
Piha Beach, Auckland
Piha Beach sits on Auckland's west coast, about 45 km and 1 hour 15 minutes from central Auckland via Scenic Drive and Piha Road. It fits the Auckland to Piha drive or the first day of North Island in 7 days if you are not rushing south. Beach access is free and daylight year-round. Surf hire and lessons are easiest in summer weekends and school holidays, with shoulder-season hours shorter. Overnight at Piha Domain Motor Camp, right by the beach. Kids need close supervision here. Dogs are subject to Auckland Council seasonal rules.
Ngarunui Beach, Raglan, Waikato
Ngarunui Beach is the sensible learner beach near Raglan, 160 km and about 2 hours 15 minutes from Auckland via SH1 and SH23. It sits well on North Island in 10 days before Rotorua or Waitomo. Parking is above the beach, so allow time for the walk down with boards. Access is free, and lessons or hire are around the middle of the NZ activity-cost range. Overnight at Raglan Holiday Park. It is the most family-friendly Raglan surf option, though west-coast rips still matter.
Manu Bay, Raglan, Waikato
Manu Bay is the famous left-hand point near Raglan, 8 km and 15 minutes from town. Put it on the same North Island in 10 days route, but do not treat it as a beginner stop. Hire a board in Raglan township if you already surf; first-timers are better at Ngarunui. Parking is limited, and a 7 m motorhome feels bulky on busy summer afternoons. The wave is free and daylight-access year-round. Overnight again at Raglan Holiday Park, then head toward Rotorua next morning.
Wainui Beach and Makorori, Gisborne
Wainui Beach and nearby Makorori sit north of Gisborne, a good east-coast detour on North to South in 21 days. Rotorua to Gisborne is about 280 km and 4 hours via SH2, then Gisborne to Napier is 215 km and 3 hours 15 minutes. Hire is generally easiest in Gisborne city. The beaches are free and open year-round in daylight, while rental hours shorten outside summer. Overnight at Waikanae Beach Top 10 Holiday Park. Kids can enjoy the sand, but choose conditions carefully.
St Clair Beach, Dunedin
St Clair Beach is Dunedin's easiest surf stop for motorhome travellers on the Southern Scenic Route or Dunedin to Invercargill drive. It is 7 km and 15 minutes from central Dunedin. Surf hire and lessons operate locally, though winter is cold and less forgiving. Beach access is free, year-round daylight. Overnight at Dunedin Holiday Park and Motels near St Kilda, then continue south toward the Catlins. Families like the esplanade and hot-water shower area, but dogs need local rule checks.
How to fit them into a route
For a short North Island trip, choose either Piha or Raglan, not both. Auckland to Piha is a half-day surf side trip, but the road is narrow and winding. Raglan takes more driving yet gives you easier beginner lessons and a cleaner link toward Rotorua or Tongariro.
For a longer North to South in 21 days plan, Raglan plus Gisborne works if you accept the east-coast detour. Do not add it to a rushed 14-day two-island itinerary unless surfing is one of the main reasons for the trip.
In the South Island, St Clair is the cleanest fit. It pairs naturally with Dunedin, the Catlins and the Southern Scenic Route. It is not on the Queenstown to Milford Sound line, so adding it from Queenstown costs a full extra day by the time you drive SH6 and SH8 alternatives across Otago.
Practical notes: cost, hours, kids and dogs
Beaches are free. Surf lessons and board hire range from a small add-on day cost to the middle of the NZ activity-cost range, depending on whether you need a wetsuit, coaching and transport. Summer has the longest hire hours. March and April often have good water temperature with less pressure on parking.
NZ drives on the left. A foreign licence in English is valid for up to 12 months; if it is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit or approved translation. Minimum hire age varies from 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class.
For overnights, read Freedom camping in NZ and Self-contained certification explained before assuming a beach car park is legal. West-coast surf towns are not relaxed about illegal overnighting. Use holiday parks when you want showers, laundry and somewhere to dry wetsuits.
What's worth skipping
Skip any surf stop that requires a long gravel-road search on your first or second day driving a motorhome. It is poor value in time, fuel and nerves, especially after a long-haul flight.
Also skip advanced reef or bar breaks when the forecast is big and onshore. New Zealand surf can look inviting from a car park and still be unsuitable for visitors. If the locals are watching rather than paddling out, that is usually your answer.
