This 16 day NZ itinerary runs Auckland to Christchurch with Northland, Rotorua, Tongariro, the Cook Strait ferry, Queenstown, Milford Sound and the Catlins edge. It is not relaxed. It works if you are comfortable with several long driving days and you book the Picton ferry early.

Use this beside the North to South in 14 days route guide, the Bay of Islands, Rotorua and Queenstown region pages, the March when-to-go notes, the 2-berth vs 4-berth vehicle-size guide, and What a NZ campervan trip actually costs. Get this itinerary as a printable plan with the holiday-park shortlist baked in, or reply with your dates and we'll have a planner adjust the pacing to match your party.

How this itinerary is paced

This is the fast version of a full-country trip. The North to South in 21 days route is kinder. This one keeps the Bay of Islands and Milford Sound, then pays for it with two big transfer days: Paihia to Auckland, and Kaikoura to Lake Tekapo.

Pick up a 2-berth or compact 4-berth if you can. A 6-berth is cheaper per person, but it is tiring in supermarket car parks, on SH94 to Milford Sound, and through small towns like Russell and Kaka Point.

New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum hire age varies from about 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class. Book the Interislander or Bluebridge Cook Strait ferry 4 months out for December to February, not 2 weeks out.

Where to slow down vs where to skip

Slow down in Queenstown, Te Anau and Mount Cook if weather is clear. Those are the places where one extra night changes the trip. The Queenstown region page and Milford Sound drive guide are worth reading before you decide how hard to push Day 12 and Day 13.

Skip Northland first if you are nervous after landing. The Bay of Islands is lovely, but it adds a long return leg before the southbound run. Skip Oamaru second if you need a cleaner finish into Christchurch. Do not cut the ferry buffer. Wellington traffic and ferry check-in can ruin a tight day.

If you've got 2 extra days

Day ~7
Day ~7

Add one night in Wanaka between Mount Cook and Queenstown. Drive SH8 over Lindis Pass at 965 m, then SH6 beside Lake Dunstan. It breaks the alpine day and gives you time for the lakefront or a short Mount Iron walk.

Add the second night in Te Anau, not Milford Sound, unless you have a specific booking. Te Anau has easier fuel, groceries, dump stations and weather flexibility. Cascade Creek DOC campsite is useful for self-contained vehicles, but it is basic and seasonal.

If you're a day behind

The cleanest recovery is to remove Day 11 in Queenstown and continue to Te Anau. The next option is to end the Catlins section at Dunedin and drive Dunedin to Christchurch in one long day, about 360 km and 5 hours pure driving.

If the delay happens before the ferry, do not gamble on a same-day replacement sailing in peak season. Read the Cook Strait ferry with a campervan guide and move the South Island plan back by one night.

What this trip realistically costs

Day ~10
Day ~10

The big cost days are Day 7 for the ferry, Day 8 for fuel, Day 13 for Milford Sound, and any paid activity day in Queenstown or Rotorua. Food cost is easiest to control if you shop in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Queenstown, Te Anau and Oamaru, then use smaller stores only for top-ups.

Use What a NZ campervan trip actually costs for the live framework. It explains daily hire rate seasonality, fuel use for a 2-berth vs 4-berth, holiday parks vs DOC campsites, insurance options, Road User Charges on diesel vehicles, and where public holidays distort the numbers.

A quiet moment on 16-day full NZ road trip

The slow part of this itinerary is the part that earns the photographs — the morning the cloud lifts off the lake, the night the kids fall asleep counting stars. Build the pace so those moments aren't optional.

Two-and-a-bit weeks — adds Catlins or Northland to the 14-day plan.

16-day full NZ road trip — FAQ

Can we shave a day off without breaking it?
Yes, but remove a place rather than squeezing every drive. The least damaging cut is Queenstown Day 11, because the route still reaches Te Anau and Milford Sound. If you are starting tired after a long-haul flight, cut Northland instead and begin with Auckland to Rotorua. Do not remove the Wellington ferry buffer or try to combine Te Anau, Milford Sound and the Catlins into one day.
Is Day 7 really 6 hours of driving?
No, the steering-wheel time is closer to 2.5 hours after you leave the ferry in Picton. The day feels long because the Cook Strait ferry takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, and you should plan around 3.5 hours with loading. Add check-in, disembarking, food, fuel and SH1 coastal stops, and Wellington to Kaikoura becomes a 7 to 8 hour travel day.
What if our ferry is delayed?
Protect the next two nights first. Tell the Kaikoura holiday park your new arrival time, then move Lake Tekapo only if the delay is more than half a day. In summer, Interislander and Bluebridge sailings can be full, so assuming an easy swap is risky. Keep snacks, water and warm layers in the cab, not buried under bedding in the rear of the motorhome.
Can we do this in winter?
You can, but it becomes a very different trip. Daylight is short, the Desert Road can close, Lindis Pass at 965 m can have ice, and SH94 to Milford Sound has avalanche controls in winter. Carry snow chains if your hire conditions require them and know how to fit them. I would also remove Northland or the Catlins so you are not arriving after dark most nights.
