1 month nz road trip

Day-by-day itinerary
Aoraki Routes
Duration Flexible
Islands Varies
Distance ~1540 km
Berths 2-berth

This 1 month NZ road trip runs Auckland to Christchurch and gives both islands room to breathe. It borrows the spine of our North to South in 21 days route, then adds Bay of Islands, Abel Tasman, Franz Josef, Stewart Island and the east coast back to Christchurch.

It suits March best, or late February if you book the Cook Strait ferry early. Read it beside the Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Nelson, West Coast, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Dunedin and Christchurch region pages, plus the vehicle-size guide and What a NZ campervan trip actually costs.

How this itinerary is paced

This is a one-way plan from Auckland to Christchurch. It assumes you drive on the left, take the Wellington to Picton ferry, and use a self-contained 2-berth or 4-berth motorhome. A 6-berth works for families, but it is slower on SH6, the Crown Range at 1,121 m, and the Milford Road.

Foreign licences in English are valid for 12 months. If your licence is not in English, carry an IDP or approved translation. Minimum hire age varies from 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class. In peak season, book the Picton ferry about 4 months out, not 2 weeks.

Where to slow down vs where to skip

Slow down in Nelson, West Coast, Wanaka, Queenstown and Mount Cook / Aoraki. Weather decides those places. If rain closes in at Franz Josef, carry the spare energy to Wanaka rather than forcing a glacier activity.

Skip the Coromandel beach loop on this version. Miranda gives a practical overnight without turning the first week into a driving test. Stewart Island is also optional. If the forecast is rough, stay on the mainland and put that day into the Catlins or Dunedin.

If you've got 2 extra days

Day ~7
Day ~7

Add one night in Tongariro National Park for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, only if the shuttle and weather line up. Add the second night at Mavora Lakes DOC campsite between Queenstown and Te Anau, or at Lake Lyndon DOC campsite if you want an Arthur's Pass side-trip from Christchurch. That turns the trip from broad to properly unhurried.

If you're a day behind

Drop Day 23 in Oamaru and drive Dunedin to Mount Cook in one long day: 320 km, about 4 hr 45 pure driving and 6 hr 30 with stops. It is not elegant, but it preserves Milford Sound, West Coast and Mount Cook. The other easy save is to skip the Stewart Island day and use Invercargill only as a sleep stop.

What this trip realistically costs

Day ~10
Day ~10

Do not budget this from a single daily average. The pattern matters. Heavy fuel days are Days 4, 7, 10, 13, 18 and 26. Big grocery resets are Auckland, Rotorua, Nelson, Wanaka or Queenstown, Dunedin and Christchurch. DOC nights such as White Horse Hill help, while city holiday parks cost more but solve laundry, power and dump-station needs.

Use our What a NZ campervan trip actually costs guide with this exact pacing, then adjust for March, a 2-berth or 4-berth layout, ferry length, insurance choice, supermarket cooking, and how often you swap holiday parks for DOC sites. A quiet moment on 28-day deep NZ road trip

The slow part of this itinerary is the part that earns the photographs — the morning the cloud lifts off the lake, the night the kids fall asleep counting stars. Build the pace so those moments aren't optional.

28-day deep NZ road trip — FAQ

Can we shave a day off without breaking it?
Yes, but remove a soft day rather than a link day. The cleanest cut is Oamaru, driving Dunedin to Mount Cook in one longer push. The second option is to remove Stewart Island and keep the Catlins moving. I would not cut the ferry day, Milford day, Franz Josef to Wanaka day, or Mount Cook day. Those already depend on weather, mountain roads and limited daylight.
Is day 7 really 6 hours of driving?
Day 7 is about 4 hours 45 minutes behind the wheel from Tongariro to Wellington, but it feels like 6 hours once you add fuel, lunch, roadworks and the slower sections through towns on SH1. Do not plan a big Wellington activity that night. Park in Lower Hutt, plug in, then take public transport or a simple drive into the city if you still have energy.
What if our ferry is delayed?
Keep Day 8 light for exactly that reason. The Cook Strait crossing is scheduled around 3 hours 20 minutes, but with loading, unloading and weather disruption you should treat it as a half-day event. If you miss Nelson in daylight, stop in Picton instead and drive to Nelson the next morning. Do not stack Abel Tasman activities on the same day as the ferry.
Can we do this in winter?
You can, but it becomes a different trip. June to August means shorter days, cold nights, possible ice on the Crown Range, snow-chain requirements on some alpine roads, and a higher chance of Milford Road controls. I would add at least two buffer days and consider skipping Stewart Island. March or April gives this route a much better balance of daylight, campsite availability and settled driving.
