6-week NZ overland trip by campervan
6 weeks nz campervan
Six weeks is where New Zealand starts to make sense in a campervan. You can use SH1 when it is useful, leave it when the coast is better, and stop for weather instead of chasing a spreadsheet.
This 42-day plan runs Auckland to Christchurch via Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Rotorua, Tongariro, Wellington, Picton, Nelson, the West Coast, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Mount Cook and Kaikoura. It is the slow version of the North to South in 21 days route, with the Cook Strait ferry, Freedom camping in NZ rules, March shoulder-season timing, the 2-berth vs 4-berth vehicle-size guide, and What a NZ campervan trip actually costs all sitting behind it.

How this itinerary is paced
This is a working-holiday-friendly overland route, not a highlights sprint. It assumes a self-contained 2-berth or compact 4-berth with enough room to live inside on wet days. A 6-berth works for families, but it is harder in Coromandel townships, Wellington parking, the Crown Range Road at 1,121 m, and tight holiday-park sites.
New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for 12 months. If your licence is not in English, carry an IDP or approved translation. Minimum hire age sits roughly between 18 and 25 depending on operator and vehicle class.
Book the Cook Strait ferry early if travelling December to March. Interislander and Bluebridge both take motorhomes. Wellington to Picton is 3 hours 20 minutes sailing time, but plan 3.5 hours with loading, plus check-in time.

Where to slow down vs where to skip
Slow down in Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Tongariro, Nelson, West Coast, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mount Cook and Kaikoura. These are the places where weather changes the day, and the best plan is often the one with a spare morning.
Skip or shorten Piha, Napier, Invercargill, Oamaru or Arthur's Pass if you are tired. They are good stops, but they are not worth driving in the dark for. Keep Wellington simple: park in Lower Hutt, use public transport or taxis, and do not try to thread a large motorhome through inner-city streets.
If you've got 2 extra days
Add one day at Mavora Lakes DOC campsite between Queenstown and Te Anau if your vehicle is self-contained and you are comfortable with gravel access. Add another day at Lake Pukaki or White Horse Hill DOC if the Aoraki/Mount Cook forecast is clear.
In summer, another sensible use is Nelson and Abel Tasman. In winter, put the days into Wanaka and Queenstown instead, because snow, ice and chain restrictions can slow Crown Range, Lindis Pass at 965 m, and SH94 toward Milford Sound.
If you're a day behind
The cleanest recovery is to cut Day 2 Piha, Day 15 Hawke's Bay, Day 34 Dunedin, or Day 39 Arthur's Pass. Do not steal time from the ferry day. A missed Cook Strait sailing can push you into a later boat, and a long motorhome plus peak-season demand leaves fewer easy fixes.
If you are two days behind, run Fox Glacier straight to Queenstown only if you accept a hard day. It is about 330 km on SH6 over Haast Pass, with 5 hours pure driving and 7 hours realistic.
What this trip realistically costs
Do not price six weeks from a single daily rental rate. The real cost comes from season, one-way fees, ferry length category, fuel economy, holiday-park mix, DOC nights, insurance choice, supermarket habits and paid activities. The matching guide is What a NZ campervan trip actually costs, and it should be read with Fuel economy and prices in NZ, Holiday parks vs DOC campsites, and Food, groceries, and cooking.
Fuel spend is heaviest on Days 6, 7, 16, 25, 30 and 40. Food spend is easiest to control after Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, Nelson, Wanaka, Queenstown, Dunedin and Christchurch supermarket resets. Remote stretches such as Far North, glacier country, Milford Road and the Catlins are where you pay for poor pantry planning.
The slow part of this itinerary is the part that earns the photographs — the morning the cloud lifts off the lake, the night the kids fall asleep counting stars. Build the pace so those moments aren't optional.
Long-stay slower travel, working-holiday-friendly pacing.
