Distance ~1540 km
Berths 2-berth

This is a 14-day South Island family loop from Christchurch, shaped for school holidays rather than adult-only sightseeing speed. It borrows the bones of our South Island in 14 days route, then adds shorter driving blocks, powered holiday parks, playground stops and mid-day reset time.

The trip touches Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook / Aoraki, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Dunedin. For January, read it beside Summer (December-February), the 4-berth versus 6-berth vehicle-size guide, Travelling with kids and What a NZ campervan trip actually costs.

How this itinerary is paced

This is not the fastest NZ family road trip. It avoids the West Coast glaciers because school-holiday driving days get too long once toilet stops, snacks and playground breaks are real. It also avoids the Crown Range Road (1,121 m) in favour of SH6 through Cromwell, which is easier in a 6-berth.

Assume New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months, and an IDP or certified translation is needed if your licence is not in English. Minimum hire age varies from 18 to 25 by operator and vehicle class.

For two adults and two children, a 4-berth ensuite is usually easier to park than a 6-berth. A 6-berth gives more bed space but feels big on SH75 to Akaroa and SH94 to Milford Sound.

Where to slow down vs where to skip

Slow down at Lake Tekapo, Wanaka and Te Anau. They give children space, laundry time and proper supermarkets or food top-ups nearby. Lake Pukaki and the Mount Cook road are worth the detour, but White Horse Hill DOC campsite is basic, so one night is enough for most families.

Skip extra Queenstown driving if the town is packed. School holidays mean tight parking and slow traffic around Frankton Road. If everyone is tired, do the gondola and the lakefront, then leave Arrowtown for another trip.

If you've got 2 extra days

Day ~7
Day ~7

Add one night in Wanaka and one in Te Anau. In Wanaka, use the extra day for laundry, swimming and a short walk rather than another long attraction. In Te Anau, the extra night makes Milford less pressured and gives you a weather buffer on SH94.

Confident families with older children can add a Queenstown to Glenorchy day drive, 92 km return, about 2 hours pure driving and 4 hours with lakeside stops. Do not add it on the same day as Milford.

If you're a day behind

Cut Akaroa first. It is lovely, but SH75 is a winding out-and-back and the loop still works if you go Christchurch straight to Lake Tekapo. The next cut is the second Wanaka night. Do not cut the Te Anau night before Milford, because Queenstown to Milford and back is too much for a family campervan day.

What this trip realistically costs

Day ~10
Day ~10

Costs swing hard by school-holiday month. January is peak for campervans, holiday parks and activities, while April can be calmer but cooler. Use What a NZ campervan trip actually costs for the current cost framework, then add family realities: powered sites most nights, more supermarket shops, paid laundry, occasional takeaway meals and one or two paid activities.

Fuel use is highest on the Tekapo, Milford and Dunedin legs. A larger 6-berth uses more fuel and costs more on some ferry and parking categories, though this itinerary does not cross Cook Strait. If you adapt it into North to South in 21 days, book the Interislander or Bluebridge Picton-Wellington crossing 4 months out in peak season. The crossing is about 3 hours 20 minutes, or 3.5 hours with loading.

A quiet moment on Family 2-week school-holiday NZ road trip

The slow part of this itinerary is the part that earns the photographs — the morning the cloud lifts off the lake, the night the kids fall asleep counting stars. Build the pace so those moments aren't optional.

Specifically family-shaped — playground stops, mid-day breaks, kid-friendly stays.

Family 2-week school-holiday NZ road trip — FAQ

Can we shave a day off without breaking it?
Yes, but cut the right day. Drop Akaroa and drive from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo on day 2 instead. That saves one night without damaging the main South Island loop. I would not remove the Te Anau night before Milford Sound, and I would avoid turning the Mount Cook / Aoraki stop into a quick photo call if the weather is clear.
Is the Milford day really 8 to 9 hours with children?
Yes. Te Anau to Milford Sound is only 120 km each way, but SH94 is slow, scenic and interrupted by one-lane sections, the Homer Tunnel and frequent stops. Pure wheel time is about 4 hours return. Add a cruise, toilets, sandfly management, lunch and photo stops, and it becomes a full family day. Leave Te Anau with a full fuel tank.
What if we lose time on pickup day?
Stay in Christchurch and push Akaroa out of the plan. Pickup day often takes longer than expected, especially with child seats, bedding checks, first grocery shop and learning a larger vehicle on the left side of the road. North South Holiday Park is close to the airport, which makes it a sensible first night while everyone adjusts.
Can we do this NZ family road trip in winter?
You can, but I would reshape it. June to August brings short daylight, ice risk and possible snow-chain requirements around the Mackenzie Basin, Lindis Pass and the Milford Road. Holiday parks are quieter, but outdoor playground time is shorter. Read Winter (June-August) and Snow chains in NZ before committing, and consider dropping Milford if the forecast is poor.
