Relaxed 3-week NZ road trip for retirees
retiree nz road trip

In the first cool light, the van kettle sounds louder than the road, and a quiet holiday park can feel like the trip has already softened its shoulders. This retiree NZ road trip is the slower version of the North to South in 21 days route. It runs Auckland to Queenstown, with proper two-night stops in Rotorua, Nelson, Wanaka, Queenstown and Te Anau.
March is the easiest month to copy this plan: warm enough, less school-holiday pressure, and still good daylight. It suits a comfort-focused 2-berth ensuite or a compact 4-berth rather than a long 6-berth. Read it beside the Rotorua, Wellington and West Coast region pages, the 2-berth versus 4-berth vehicle-size guide, Cook Strait ferry with a campervan, and What a NZ campervan trip actually costs.

How this itinerary is paced
This plan keeps most relocation days under 200 km. The exceptions are Auckland to Rotorua, Murchison to Hokitika, Franz Josef to Wanaka, and the Milford Sound day from Te Anau. Those are the honest long days, and they are placed after easier nights.
You'll feel the rhythm working when a travel day still leaves enough daylight for tea, a short waterfront walk and a small debate about where the torch has gone.
New Zealand drives on the left. A foreign licence in English is valid for 12 months; if it is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit. Minimum hire age varies from 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class, but this route is written for travellers who care more about comfort, toilet access and easy parking than the lowest daily rate.
Book the Cook Strait ferry early. Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes across Wellington to Picton, but allow 3.5 hours with loading. For January to March, 4 months ahead is sensible for a motorhome space.
The stop-by-stop plan

- Stop 3: Base in Rotorua. Distance 30 km. Pure driving 0.75 hours; realistic 2 hours. Overnight Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park. Visit Te Puia or Whakarewarewa rather than trying to cover every geothermal park. Fuel and food: low fuel, cafe lunch likely.

- Stop 14: Hokitika → Franz Josef. Distance 135 km on SH6. Pure driving 2 hours; realistic 3.5 hours. Overnight Rainforest Retreat Holiday Park. Stop at Okarito Lagoon, then take the glacier valley viewpoint walk. Fuel and food: moderate fuel, limited supermarket choice.
- Stop 15: Franz Josef → Wanaka. Distance 285 km on SH6 over Haast Pass, 564 m. Pure driving 4 hours; realistic 6 hours. Overnight Wanaka TOP 10 Holiday Park. Fuel before leaving Franz Josef, top up again at Haast or Wanaka, and stop at Thunder Creek Falls. Fuel and food: highest fuel day.
- Stop 16: Base in Wanaka. Distance 20 km. Pure driving 0.5 hours; realistic 2 hours. Overnight Wanaka TOP 10 Holiday Park. Walk part of the lakefront track rather than adding another pass drive. Fuel and food: low fuel, good supermarket reset.
- Stop 17: Wanaka → Queenstown. Distance 70 km via SH6 and Cromwell. Pure driving 1.25 hours; realistic 2.5 hours. Overnight Creeksyde Queenstown. Avoid the Crown Range Road, 1,121 m, if you dislike steep, narrow driving. Visit Arrowtown after parking. Fuel and food: low fuel, eating out likely.
- Stop 18: Base in Queenstown. Distance 20 km. Pure driving 0.5 hours; realistic 2 hours. Overnight Creeksyde Queenstown. Take the lake cruise or gondola and leave the motorhome parked. Fuel and food: low fuel, higher food spend.

- Stop 20: Base in Te Anau for Milford Sound. Distance 240 km return on SH94 if self-driving. Pure driving 4 hours; realistic 8 to 9 hours. Overnight Te Anau Lakeview Holiday Park. Join a coach to Milford Sound if you want the scenery without tunnel and bus traffic pressure. Fuel and food: high fuel if self-driving, packed lunch needed.
- Stop 21: Te Anau → Queenstown. Distance 170 km on SH94 and SH6. Pure driving 2.25 hours; realistic 3.5 hours. Overnight Creeksyde Queenstown, or return the motorhome if your depot time allows. Pause at Five Rivers for coffee. Fuel and food: moderate fuel, final pantry clean-out.
Where to slow down vs where to skip
Slow down in Rotorua, Nelson, Wanaka and Te Anau. Those stops repay a second night because you can do one good activity without packing the van each morning.
Skip extra detours around Auckland, central Wellington, and the West Coast glacier towns if weather closes in. The glaciers are impressive, but low cloud and heavy rain can turn that section into an expensive waiting room. Freedom camping also needs care here: check Freedom camping in NZ and Self-contained certification explained before assuming a free overnight is legal.
If you've got 2 extra days
Add one night at Picton or Nelson after the ferry, and one night at Wanaka before Queenstown. The Picton day gives you a gentle Marlborough Sounds reset after Cook Strait. The Wanaka day lets you recover after Haast Pass before entering busier Queenstown roads.
If you prefer quiet campsites, Mavora Lakes DOC campsite is a beautiful detour between Te Anau and Queenstown, but the gravel access road is not for every rental agreement. Ask before committing.
If you're a day behind
Drop the Whanganui night and drive Taupo or Tongariro to Wellington only if both drivers are confident. It is a long push and not my first choice. The better cut is Nelson: keep Picton, skip the second Nelson night, and continue to Murchison.
Do not cut the Te Anau night before Milford Sound. Queenstown to Milford Sound and back in a motorhome is too much for a relaxed retiree itinerary, especially with SH94 traffic and the Homer Tunnel section.
What this trip realistically costs
The big moving parts are vehicle size, ferry fare, powered-site nights, fuel use on SH6 and SH94, and how often you eat out in Queenstown and Wellington. A compact ensuite 2-berth usually keeps driving and parking easier than a 6-berth, but it is not always the lowest daily rate per person. A smaller motorhome is easier at viewpoints and supermarkets, but if you need more indoor space on wet evenings, the cheaper-looking choice may not be the more comfortable one.
Use What a NZ campervan trip actually costs as the matching cost article for this itinerary. Read it with March as the assumed month, a 2-berth or compact 4-berth as the vehicle, and powered holiday parks most nights. Fuel economy and prices in NZ is the next guide to check before you build a daily budget.
The slow part of this itinerary is the part that earns the photographs — the morning the cloud lifts off the lake, the night the kids fall asleep counting stars. Build the pace so those moments aren't optional.
Slower pace, fewer drives over 200 km, comfort-tier vehicle.
