Day Trips in Christchurch is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.
Christchurch is one of the easier South Island bases for motorhome day trips. The city is flat, fuel is simple, and the main roads out are clear enough once you remember that New Zealand drives on the left.
This page sits under the Christchurch region page and fits trips such as South Island in 14 days, Christchurch to Queenstown, and the Christchurch to Arthur's Pass drive guide. February is the peak month for long daylight and busy car parks, so start earlier than feels natural.

Start with the road shape, not the map pin
From central Christchurch, the four sensible motorhome day trips are not equal. Akaroa is short but winding. Hanmer Springs is longer but straightforward. Arthur's Pass is alpine. Kaikōura is possible, but it is a big out-and-back day.
For most Christchurch day trips, a 2-berth or compact 4-berth is the easiest fit. A 6-metre-plus motorhome is workable on all four roads, but parking and turning are less relaxed in Akaroa and at small walking-track car parks. Read How to park a motorhome in NZ cities before you use Christchurch as a first-night base, and keep the Driving on the left in NZ guide handy for day one.
- Fuel first: use Christchurch or Rolleston before heading inland, and Christchurch or Amberley before going north.
- Food first: supermarkets are easier in Christchurch than in the small towns.
- Return before dark: rural roads have no street lighting, and sheep, cyclists, and campervans do share the same narrow lanes.
Akaroa: the easiest scenic day
Akaroa is 82 km from central Christchurch and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes each way via SH75, Tai Tapu, Little River, Hilltop, and Duvauchelle. It is the best first day trip if you want Banks Peninsula scenery without committing to a huge driving day.
Use the flatter parking around Akaroa Recreation Ground or signed public parking near Rue Lavaud where space allows. The waterfront streets are attractive but tight, especially around café time and cruise-ship excursion days. If you are in a longer vehicle, park once and walk.
The caveat is the Hilltop section of SH75. It is sealed and normal for locals, but it has bends, slower tourist traffic, and limited shoulder. Do not rush the descent into Akaroa. If low cloud sits on the hill, Little River and Birdlings Flat make a gentler fallback at about 50 km and 55 minutes from Christchurch.
Hanmer Springs or Arthur's Pass: pick one inland run
Hanmer Springs is 134 km from central Christchurch and usually takes 1 hour 50 minutes via SH1, Waipara, and SH7. It is the simplest inland day if your goal is soaking at Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, lunch, and an easy walk. Parking near the pools fills quickly in school holidays, so arrive before late morning or use wider street parking and walk in.
Arthur's Pass Village is about 150 km from Christchurch and takes 2 hours 15 minutes via SH73, Darfield, Springfield, Castle Hill, and Arthur's Pass at 920 m. Top up fuel at Springfield. Do not rely on Arthur's Pass for motorhome fuel. The Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre car park is easier than the smaller Devil's Punchbowl Walking Track car park when the village is busy.
The caveat is weather. SH73 is an alpine road. In winter, check road conditions and the Snow chains in NZ guide before leaving. In heavy rain, the short walks are still possible, but the drive becomes the main event, not the view.
Kaikōura: possible, but it is a long whale day
Kaikōura is 181 km from central Christchurch and takes about 2 hours 40 minutes each way on SH1 through Amberley, Cheviot, and the coastal section south of town. It belongs in a day-trip plan only if you start early and have one clear purpose, usually a Whale Watch Kaikoura sailing or the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway.
For Whale Watch Kaikoura, go straight to the Whaleway Station area and follow staff parking instructions. For the peninsula, Point Kean Viewpoint has parking, but spaces are limited and turning can be awkward for long vehicles when tour buses arrive. Keep lunch simple and avoid stacking too many stops on the return.
The caveat is cancellation risk. Whale trips are weather and sea-state dependent. If the sailing is cancelled at midday, you still face a long drive home. This is why the Kaikōura + Marlborough Sounds route often treats Kaikōura as an overnight stop rather than a Christchurch day trip.
If the weather changes, change the target
Christchurch weather can be sunny while Banks Peninsula is in cloud, and Arthur's Pass can be wet when the plains are dry. Keep the order flexible.
- Clear, calm day: choose Akaroa or Kaikōura for coastal views.
- Hot nor'west day: Hanmer Springs works well, but carry water and expect stronger winds on the open SH1 sections.
- Low cloud inland: drop Arthur's Pass and stay closer to Christchurch, Lyttelton, or Sumner.
- First motorhome day: choose Akaroa only if you are comfortable with bends. Otherwise do Hanmer Springs first.
If Christchurch is the start of your South Island in 10 days plan, do one day trip, not three. You still need energy for Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, and Queenstown.
