With Kids in Christchurch is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.
Christchurch with kids works well in a motorhome if you keep the day simple. The three easiest stops are Margaret Mahy Family Playground, the International Antarctic Centre, and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.
The catch is not the driving. It is parking a taller vehicle, avoiding school-holiday crowds in January, and not trying to cross the city three times in one afternoon.

The simple order that avoids city backtracking
Use Cathedral Square as the Christchurch anchor point. From there, Margaret Mahy Family Playground is 1 km and usually 5 to 10 minutes. The International Antarctic Centre is 11 km and 20 to 25 minutes via Memorial Avenue. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is 12 km and 20 to 25 minutes via Johns Road and Harewood Road.
If you are already staying in the city, start at Margaret Mahy before 9.30 am. Then drive to the International Antarctic Centre, and finish at Willowbank. If you have just collected a motorhome near Christchurch Airport, reverse it: Antarctic Centre first, Willowbank second, playground last if the children still have energy.
This fits neatly into the Christchurch region page and the first day of the Christchurch to Queenstown drive. It also works as a soft landing day on South Island in 14 days, especially after a long flight.
Margaret Mahy Family Playground without parking stress
Margaret Mahy Family Playground is the best free kid stop in central Christchurch. From Cathedral Square it is 1 km, or 5 to 10 minutes by motorhome depending on one-way streets. The playground sits beside the Avon River near Manchester Street and Armagh Street.
The practical issue is vehicle fit. A compact 2-berth or 4-berth is manageable if you find a long on-street bay nearby. A 6-metre-plus vehicle is harder. Avoid small central car parks with height bars, and do not nose into short spaces where your rear overhang blocks the lane.
Go early, or late afternoon after the day-visitor rush. Toilets are on site. Food is easy nearby, but leaving a motorhome while you walk into the central city is not ideal with luggage visible. Keep the stop short and tidy.
Airport-side stops: Antarctic Centre and Willowbank
The International Antarctic Centre is beside Christchurch Airport at 38 Orchard Road. From Cathedral Square, allow 11 km and 20 to 25 minutes. The car park is easier than central Christchurch, with space for larger vehicles, but keep clear of coach bays and signed drop-off areas. This is the cleanest bad-weather option with children.
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is at 60 Hussey Road. From central Christchurch, allow 12 km and 20 to 25 minutes. From the Antarctic Centre it is about 7 km and 10 to 15 minutes, so the two pair well. The car park usually suits motorhomes, but it can get tight during January, weekends, and school holidays.
The caveat at Willowbank is pacing. It is not a quick photo stop. Give it 90 minutes to 2 hours, longer if your children want to move slowly. After rain, expect wet paths and bring spare shoes back into the van.
Fuel, food, overnight base, and the next road
Fuel is easiest before or after the airport-side stops. Russley Road, Memorial Avenue, and Johns Road have service stations that are simpler for turning than inner-city blocks. If you are heading south or inland after Christchurch, top up before joining SH1 or SH73.
North South Holiday Park in Harewood is a practical overnight base with children. It is about 9 km and 15 to 20 minutes from Cathedral Square, close to Christchurch Airport and SH1. It suits the first or last night better than trying to freedom camp close to the city. For the rules, read Freedom camping in Christchurch and How to park a motorhome in NZ cities before assuming a roadside spot is legal.
A 4-berth is the easiest family size around Christchurch. A 6-berth is comfortable at night but clumsy near the central playground. If this day feeds into Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, allow 225 km and about 3 hours 15 minutes via SH1 and SH79 once you actually leave town.
