Best Beaches in Nelson is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.
Nelson is not one beach. It is a short city swim at Tahunanui, a busy Abel Tasman day at Kaiteriteri or Marahau, and a much longer Golden Bay run over Tākaka Hill to Pohara and Wharariki.
This page sits under the Nelson region page and suits travellers threading the area into South Island in 14 days, North to South in 21 days, or the Nelson to Picton drive. January is the peak beach month, so parking and campsite space change fast.

Start close: Tahunanui for the easy swim
Tahunanui Beach is the practical first stop. It is about 5 km from central Nelson, usually 10 minutes by motorhome outside commuter traffic. The sand is broad, the water is sheltered, and you do not need to cross the hills to feel like you have reached the coast.
Motorhome fit is simple here. Use the public parking around Rocks Road and Beach Road, but read the signs carefully. Day parking is fine in marked spaces. Overnighting is not the same thing. Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is the obvious legal stay beside the beach, and it works well for a first or last Nelson night.
Fuel and supermarkets are easy in Nelson and Richmond. If this is your first day after collecting a vehicle, this is also a gentle place to practise left-side driving before taking SH60 toward Motueka.
Abel Tasman edge: Kaiteriteri then Marahau
Kaiteriteri Beach is 60 km from Nelson, usually 1 hour 10 minutes via Richmond, Mapua turn-offs and Motueka on SH60. It is the classic golden-sand stop, but it is not a secret in January. The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve car park fills early on hot days. A 6-metre-plus motorhome fits better before 10 am than at lunchtime.
Marahau is about 67 km from Nelson, around 1 hour 20 minutes. It is the road-end for the southern Abel Tasman Coast Track and water taxis. The road narrows after Kaiteriteri, so take it slowly and avoid arriving tired. Marahau Beach Camp is useful if you want to stay put and walk into the national park in the morning.
Fill fuel in Richmond or Motueka. Do not assume the smaller beach settlements will solve a low tank, a full toilet cassette, or a grey-water problem. Our dump stations and water fills guide is worth checking before you leave Nelson.
Golden Bay run: Pohara, Tata Beach and Wharariki
Pohara Beach is 111 km from Nelson, about 2 hours 10 minutes on a clean run. The key section is Tākaka Hill on SH60. It is steep, winding, and slow, with a summit around 791 m. Use low gear downhill and pull over where safe if traffic builds behind you.
Tata Beach and Ligar Bay sit just beyond Pohara, about 115 km from Nelson and roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. They are better for a quieter swim than for large-vehicle manoeuvring at busy times. Pohara Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park is the easier overnight base for this coast.
Wharariki Beach is the big stretch. It is about 153 km from Nelson, normally 3 hours 10 minutes plus a 20-minute walk from the car park. The final approach near Puponga includes exposed rural road and gravel sections. Wind is common, swimming can be dangerous, and the beach is best treated as a walk and photo stop, not a casual swim.
A sensible beach order for a motorhome trip
If you have half a day, stay local: Nelson to Tahunanui, then maybe Mapua Wharf, 33 km and 35 minutes from Nelson, rather than forcing Abel Tasman. If you have a full day, run Nelson to Kaiteriteri, then Marahau, and return before dusk.
Golden Bay deserves at least one night. Nelson to Pohara and back is possible, but it turns a beach day into a driving day. Wharariki is better from Collingwood or Puponga than from Nelson. Collingwood is about 128 km from Nelson, around 2 hours 35 minutes, and fuel hours can be limited.
A compact 2-berth or compact 4-berth is the easier size for these beaches. Larger motorhomes are workable, but parking stress rises sharply at Kaiteriteri and on small Golden Bay beach roads. Cross-check the vehicle-size guide and the Freedom camping in NZ guide before assuming a beach car park is a legal overnight stop.
