Best Rotorua walks for a motorhome day

Rotorua is easy walking country, but the car parks are not all equal once you arrive in a motorhome. Use Rotorua city centre as the hub, then plan short drives to Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, Blue Lake, Okere Falls and Hamurana Springs.

Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest is the easiest first walk from Rotorua. The Long Mile Road car park is about 5 km from the city centre, normally 8 to 10 minutes via Te Ngae Road and Tarawera Road. A 30 to 60 minute forest loop is enough if you are still adjusting to New Zealand driving on the left.

The main caveat is parking pressure. The car park works for standard motorhomes if you arrive early, but it gets tight with bike traffic and tour buses from late morning. Do not nose into small angled parks if your rear overhang blocks the lane.

Blue Lake, signed as Lake Tikitapu, is about 10 km from Rotorua, 15 minutes via Tarawera Road. The full lake loop is about 5.5 km and usually takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. It is a better fit for a longer leg stretch than Redwoods.

Okere Falls Scenic Reserve sits northeast of Rotorua on SH33, about 21 km and 20 to 25 minutes from the city centre. The Okere Falls Track is short, roughly 1.2 km one way, with river viewpoints, Tutea Falls and rafting activity below.

The practical issue is the car park. It is not huge, and rafting vehicles come and go. A motorhome fits better before 10 am or later in the afternoon. Keep clear of the boat-loading areas and do not use private roadside pull-ins on Trout Pool Road.

Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve is about 17 km north of Rotorua, around 20 minutes via SH36 and Hamurana Road. The spring walk is gentle and usually takes 45 to 60 minutes, with very clear water and shaded sections.

Check opening times and entry conditions before driving there, because access is managed and may not match a public DOC-style track. The car park is manageable for a motorhome, but it is not a place to turn up late and hope for informal overnight parking.

For a clean motorhome day, start at Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, continue to Blue Lake, then drive through to Okere Falls Scenic Reserve. Add Hamurana Springs Nature Reserve only if you still have energy and daylight.

Fill with fuel in Rotorua before you start, especially if you are continuing toward Taupo or Tongariro later in the day. If you are in a 6-metre-plus vehicle, Redwoods and Blue Lake are the two that need the most parking judgement. Okere Falls is shorter but busier in bursts. Hamurana is calmer, but only if you have checked access first.
