Things To Do in Rotorua is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.
Rotorua is one of the easier North Island towns to handle in a motorhome, as long as you do not treat every town-centre car park as motorhome-friendly. The main geothermal stops sit south of town, the forest sits east, and Hobbiton is a proper day trip toward Matamata.
This page sits under the Rotorua region page and lines up with the North Island in 10 days route and the Rotorua + Tongariro loop. March is a very good month here: warm enough for lake and spa time, but less squeezed than January.

Start with geothermal stops south of town
Whakarewarewa is the close, easy geothermal choice. From central Rotorua, allow 3 km and 5 to 8 minutes to Te Puia on Hemo Road, or Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village beside it. Both have visitor parking used by coaches, so a 2-berth or compact 4-berth is simple enough. A longer 6-berth fits better earlier in the day before tour traffic builds.
The practical caveat is that these are not just steam-and-photo stops. Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village is a living village, and Te Puia runs guided experiences. Check tour times before you drive over, rather than arriving between sessions and sitting in a hot van.
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is 27 km south of central Rotorua via SH5, usually 25 to 30 minutes in a motorhome. The car park is large and suits bigger vehicles. If you want Lady Knox Geyser, aim to be parked by 9:30 am for the 10:15 am presentation. No dogs are allowed, and this is not an overnight parking spot.
Use the forest and spa as your town-day pair
For mountain biking, use Waipa MTB Car Park at Whakarewarewa Forest. It is about 7 km from central Rotorua and takes 10 to 15 minutes via Te Ngae Road or Sala Street. Waipa has space, bike hire, toilets and food carts at busy times. Do not go hunting for tiny forest-side pull-ins in a rental motorhome. Use the proper hub.
Polynesian Spa is only 1 km from central Rotorua, about 5 minutes by road, but parking is the catch. Town-centre spaces around Hinemoa Street, Pukaki Street and Government Gardens can be short, angled or time-limited. If you are in a 6-metre-plus vehicle, it is often easier to park once near the lakefront and walk back, or visit in the evening after day-tripper pressure drops.
A sensible order is forest in the morning, supermarket and fuel after lunch, then spa late afternoon or evening. Pak'nSave Rotorua on Amohau Street is central and useful for a stock-up. For fuel, Fairy Springs Road and Fenton Street have easy-access stations, but turn slowly and remember NZ drives on the left.
Treat Hobbiton as a separate day trip
Hobbiton Movie Set is near Matamata, not in Rotorua. From central Rotorua to The Shire's Rest, allow about 74 km and 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes via SH5 and SH28. The parking is built for visitor traffic and takes motorhomes well, but entry is by timed tour. Do not cut it fine.
Leave Rotorua at least 1 hour 45 minutes before your tour time. That gives you a toilet stop, rural-road buffer and time to park without rushing a large vehicle. The roads are sealed but narrower than many overseas visitors expect, with farm entrances and local traffic. If this is your first NZ driving week, read the Driving on the left in NZ guide before planning a tight morning.
Hobbiton pairs well with the Auckland to Rotorua drive guide if you are coming south, or with Rotorua to Taupo if you are moving on toward Tongariro National Park. It does not pair well with Wai-O-Tapu on the same day unless you like watching the clock.
What to skip when the day gets tight
If you only have one full day, do not try to cover every geothermal park, the forest, the spa and Hobbiton. Rotorua works better when you choose one main geothermal stop, one active stop and one soak or dinner.
- Half day: Whakarewarewa or Te Puia, then Polynesian Spa.
- Full day in town: Waipa MTB Car Park, lunch, Wai-O-Tapu, evening spa.
- Day trip: Hobbiton, then a quiet lakefront evening back in Rotorua.
For overnight planning, Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park is handy to the southern attractions, while All Seasons Holiday Park is on the eastern side near the airport road and lake access. If you are relying on freedom camping, check the Freedom camping in NZ guide and your self-containment status. Rotorua Lakes Council rules are location-specific, and a blue sticker does not mean you can stop anywhere.
