A quiet moment exploring things to do in Wanaka

Things To Do in Wanaka is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.

Wānaka is easy to like and slightly awkward in a motorhome. The lakefront is busy, the popular photo stops have limited parking, and the roads out to Cardrona and Lake Hāwea are simple only if you give yourself time.

Use this as the narrow things-to-do note beside the main Wanaka region page. It also fits the South Island in 14 days route and the Christchurch to Queenstown route, especially in March when the weather is still settled but January crowds have eased. Get the regional planning note that pulls these things-to-do picks into a half-day plan, or reply with your dates if you'd like a planner to slot Wanaka into your wider trip.

Start with the easy town stops

Puzzling World is 2 km, about 5 minutes, from central Wānaka on SH84. It has the easiest motorhome fit on this list, with a proper visitor car park and space to turn a larger vehicle. It works well as a first stop after fuelling at BP Wānaka or Z Wānaka in town. The caveat is timing: wet mornings and school holidays bring families, so arrive near opening or leave it for late afternoon.

That Wānaka Tree is about 2 km, or 5 minutes, west of the town centre near the lakefront walking track by Waterfall Creek. Do not expect a motorhome-friendly attraction car park. Use marked public parking only and walk the last section. Sunrise is popular, but it is also when people park badly and block locals. A compact 2-berth or compact 4-berth is easier here than a 6-metre-plus vehicle.

Roy's Peak needs an early, honest plan

Roys Peak Track car park is 6 km, about 10 minutes, from Wānaka on Mount Aspiring Road. The track is 16 km return and usually takes 5 to 6 hours, with a hard 1,200 m climb. This is not a casual lake stroll before lunch.

The motorhome issue is the car park, not the road. It fills early in summer and on clear autumn days. Start before 7 am, or choose another walk. Overnight camping is not allowed at the track car park, and the track is normally closed for lambing from 1 October to 10 November. Check the DOC Roys Peak Track listing before building your day around it.

Lake Hāwea and Cardrona are the short drives

Lake Hāwea is 17 km, about 20 minutes, northeast of Wānaka via SH6. The drive is straightforward, with lake viewpoints and a useful reset if Wānaka town feels full. Park around Lake Hāwea township only where signed. Wind can come up quickly across the lake, so keep doors controlled and avoid loose chairs or awnings.

Cardrona Hotel is 24 km, about 30 minutes, from Wānaka on Cardrona Valley Road. It is a good lunch or coffee stop if you are also reading the Wanaka to Cardrona drive guide or continuing toward Queenstown. The caveat is the road beyond Cardrona. The Crown Range reaches 1,121 m, has steep sections, and can need snow chains in winter. New Zealand drives on the left, so pull over only where there is proper space.

A sensible order for one Wānaka day

If the weather is clear and Roys Peak matters, make that the day. Fuel in Wānaka, drive 6 km to the track car park, walk early, then recover at the lakefront. Add That Wānaka Tree only if you still have patience for parking.

If you want a lighter motorhome day, start at Puzzling World, move to Lake Hāwea for a picnic, then return through Wānaka and continue to Cardrona Hotel in the afternoon. That order keeps you out of the tightest lakefront parking during the middle of the day.

For overnight legality, read the Freedom camping in Wanaka guide before assuming a lakeside pull-in is allowed. Certified self-contained vehicles still need to follow local signs, and non-certified vehicles should plan on a holiday park or other legal campground.

Things To Do in Wanaka — FAQ

Can I park a motorhome at Roys Peak?
Yes, but only if there is marked space in the Roys Peak Track car park, 6 km and about 10 minutes from Wānaka. It fills early on clear days. Do not park on road edges or block farm access. The walk is 16 km return and steep, so plan water, layers and daylight. Overnight camping is not allowed at the car park.
Is That Wānaka Tree worth doing in a large motorhome?
It is worth a short stop if you treat it as a walk, not a drive-up photo stop. The tree is around 2 km, or 5 minutes, from central Wānaka near Waterfall Creek. Use legal public parking and walk along the lakefront. A 6-metre-plus motorhome can be awkward when the lakefront is busy, especially around sunrise and sunset.
Should I drive from Wānaka to Cardrona in winter?
Wānaka to Cardrona Hotel is 24 km and usually about 30 minutes on Cardrona Valley Road. In winter, check road conditions before leaving town. If you continue toward Queenstown over the Crown Range, you reach 1,121 m and may need snow chains. Many visitors choose the longer SH6 route via Cromwell when weather is poor or they are new to larger vehicles.
