Hokitika by motorhome: greenstone, glow-worms, gorge
west coast hokitika greenstone glowworms
- west coast
Hokitika Greenstone Glowworms in West Coast is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.
Hokitika works well as a West Coast motorhome stop because the best pieces are close together. From Greymouth it is 39 km south on SH6, usually 35 to 40 minutes. From Franz Josef it is 135 km north, allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in dry weather.
This page fits under our West Coast region page and suits the Greymouth to Franz Josef drive guide, or a slower South Island in 14 days route. January is the tightest month for sites around town, while March is often easier for parking and dusk timing.

Start in town with greenstone and the practical jobs
Use central Hokitika as your zero point. Mountain Jade Hokitika on Weld Street is about 300 m from the clock tower, a 5 minute walk if you park once and move on foot. Revell Street and Weld Street also have small pounamu and craft shops. Ask whether a piece is New Zealand pounamu or imported greenstone, as both appear in retail cabinets.
Motorhomes fit better if you avoid the tightest angle parks near the shopfronts. Look for longer spaces around the town edge, then walk back. Hokitika Beach Sign is about 700 m from the centre, 8 to 10 minutes on foot, but the beachfront can be windy and exposed. Do your groceries at New World Hokitika, roughly 600 m from the centre, before you head inland. There is no fuel at Hokitika Gorge.
Run inland to Hokitika Gorge before the light drops
Hokitika Gorge is 33 km from central Hokitika. Allow 35 to 40 minutes each way via Kaniere and Kokatahi-Kowhitirangi Road, then Whitcombe Valley Road. The road is sealed, rural and narrower than SH6. Drive on the left, expect one-lane bridges, and give stock trucks more room than you think they need.
The Hokitika Gorge car park is built for visitor traffic and is usually workable in a motorhome, but arrive earlier in the afternoon in January or February. The swing bridge and main viewing loop take 45 to 60 minutes at an easy pace. Rain changes the water colour and makes the track slippery. If the river is brown after heavy weather, it is still a decent forest walk, not the turquoise photo most people came for.
Save Glow Worm Dell for proper dusk
Glow Worm Dell is on SH6 at the northern edge of Hokitika, about 1.5 km from the town centre and 3 minutes by motorhome. It is not a daytime stop. Go after dusk, switch off torches once your eyes adjust, and keep voices low. The track is very short, roughly 5 minutes in, but it is dark, damp and uneven.
The parking is roadside and limited. A 6 metre plus motorhome can fit if you are patient, but do not block the SH6 shoulder or swing across the centre line when turning. If you are nervous about night parking, leave the vehicle at your holiday park and use a short taxi ride, or visit just after sunset before traffic thins too much.
Where to overnight without creating a morning mess
For powered sites, Hokitika's Kiwi Holiday Park and Motels is about 2.5 km from the town centre, around 5 minutes by road. 252 Beachside Motels & Holiday Park is roughly 1.5 km from the centre and about 4 minutes by road. Both are easier than trying to sleep in town and then hunt for water, laundry and waste facilities in the morning.
For a DOC-style night, Lake Mahinapua Campsite is 12 km south of Hokitika on SH6, usually 10 to 12 minutes. Hans Bay, Lake Kaniere Campsite is about 24 km inland, allow 30 minutes because the lakeside road is slower. The caveat is simple: DOC sites are not a substitute for town services. Arrive with drinking water, food and an empty grey-water tank. For legal roadside stops, read Freedom camping in NZ and Self-contained certification explained before relying on an app pin.
