The Fox Glacier to Wanaka drive is one of the South Island’s cleanest point-to-point legs. It stays on SH6 the whole way, runs about 262 km, and crosses Haast Pass at 564 m before dropping beside Lake Hawea into the Wanaka region.

Allow 4 hours of pure driving. In a motorhome, with fuel, toilets, photos, and one short waterfall stop, plan on 5.5 to 6.5 hours. This leg often sits inside South Island in 14 days, South Island in 10 days, or an Auckland to Queenstown one-way route.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

Fox Glacier to Wanaka is simple on paper: follow SH6 south through Bruce Bay, Haast, Haast Pass, Makarora, Lake Hawea, then into Wanaka. The road is sealed all the way. It is mostly two-lane, with narrow bridges, rainforest corners, and slow tourist traffic in summer.

  • Distance: about 262 km.
  • Pure driving time: about 4 hours in settled conditions.
  • Realistic motorhome time: 5.5 to 6.5 hours with sensible stops.
  • Highest point: Haast Pass, 564 m.
  • Recommended vehicle size: 2-berth or 4-berth is easiest. A 6-berth can do it, but give it time on the bends and pull over when traffic builds behind you.

If this is your first long South Island leg, read First time driving a motorhome and the vehicle-size guide before you leave the West Coast.

Three stops worth making, in order

Lake Matheson is the early call, 6 km from Fox Glacier township on a sealed side road. Go only if the morning is clear. The full loop is about 1.5 hours on foot, but the jetty viewpoint works if you want a shorter pause.

Knights Point Lookout is the right roadside stop after Bruce Bay. It gives you the first proper coastal view south and is easy enough for a motorhome if the car park is not full.

Thunder Creek Falls is the best short stop after Haast township. It is a 5-minute walk from SH6 in Mount Aspiring National Park. If DOC has access warnings after heavy rain, skip it and use a Lake Hawea roadside viewpoint closer to Wanaka.

A quiet moment on the Fox Glacier to Wanaka — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Fuel and food along the way

Do not leave Fox Glacier low on fuel. The West Coast looks busy on a map, but services thin out quickly south of the glaciers. Haast township is the key fuel stop, with Allied fuel commonly used by travellers before the pass. Makarora may have limited services, but do not plan your tank around late-night availability there.

Wanaka has the better service range, including Z Energy, BP, Mobil, and supermarkets. If you are cooking in the van, stock properly in Wanaka rather than expecting a large grocery shop between Fox Glacier and Haast.

For a slower day, lunch in Haast works well. For a faster day, keep food in the van and stop at Thunder Creek Falls or Lake Hawea instead.

The two recommended pace options

Same-day pace: leave Fox Glacier by 9 am, stop at Knights Point and Thunder Creek Falls, fuel in Haast, and reach Wanaka mid-afternoon. This is the normal plan in October to April, especially in March when daylight is still useful and the roads are less crowded than January.

Overnight pace: use Haast, Pleasant Flat, Cameron Flat, or Makarora if you want shorter driving days. Cameron Flat Campsite is a practical DOC-style stop near the Makarora end, while Wanaka TOP 10 Holiday Park and Glendhu Bay Motor Camp suit travellers who want showers, laundry, and an easier next morning.

This leg links the West Coast region with Wanaka. It is not a ferry-timing day, but if your wider plan starts with the Cook Strait crossing, build that pressure into the route earlier, not here.

Haast Pass SH6 south, 4-hr scenic drive, alpine pass.

When not to do this drive in one day

Haast Pass is lower than Lindis Pass or the Crown Range, but it still gets winter ice, snow, rockfall, and weather closures. In June, July, and August, check Waka Kotahi road updates before leaving Fox Glacier. If chain signs are active, follow them. If you are not comfortable fitting chains to a motorhome, wait.

Avoid leaving after lunch in winter. The shaded western side of the pass can stay cold, and Lake Hawea to Wanaka is not where you want to be tired while learning New Zealand’s left-side driving. If rain has been heavy on the West Coast, also expect surface water, slips, and slower trucks on SH6.

Fox Glacier to Wanaka — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Haast Pass?
Yes, a 6-berth can drive SH6 over Haast Pass, and the pass is only 564 m. The issue is not altitude so much as length, weight, and cornering speed. Use lower gears on descents, keep left, and pull into safe bays when cars gather behind you. In winter, check chain requirements before leaving Fox Glacier. If you are nervous, leave early and take the day slowly.
Should we overnight in Haast or push through to Wanaka?
Push through if you leave Fox Glacier in the morning, the weather is settled, and you only want two or three stops. Overnight near Haast, Pleasant Flat, Cameron Flat, or Makarora if you walked Lake Matheson, started late, or are travelling with children. Wanaka is a nicer two-night base, but arriving tired in the dark is not worth it.
Is fuel cheaper in Wanaka than on the West Coast?
Often, yes, Wanaka has more competition and more fuel outlets than the small West Coast settlements. Still, do not gamble on price by running low between Fox Glacier and Haast. Fill enough to cross the pass comfortably, then top up properly in Wanaka if the pump price looks better. Motorhomes use more fuel on wet roads and climbs than many first-time visitors expect.
