The Greymouth to Franz Josef drive is a straight West Coast run south on SH6. It is about 174 km. Allow 2 hours 30 minutes of pure driving, or 4 to 5 hours if you fuel in Hokitika, stop at Lake Mahinapua and take a proper look at the glacier township when you arrive.

This leg sits neatly inside South Island in 10 days, South Island in 14 days and North to South in 21 days. March is often the easiest month for this coast, with useful daylight and fewer summer queues, but rain can still change the feel of the road.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

Greymouth to Franz Josef is 174 km on SH6. The road is sealed all the way. In a motorhome, the pure driving time is usually 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. A realistic travel day is 4 hours if you keep the stops tidy, or 5 hours if you add lunch and a short walk.

There is no alpine pass on this leg. You are not crossing Arthur's Pass or Haast Pass. The challenge is different: wet West Coast weather, shaded bends, one-lane bridges, logging trucks and tourists stopping suddenly for views.

Fuel is easiest in Greymouth or Hokitika. Z Energy in Greymouth is a simple top-up before you leave town. Caltex Hokitika is a sensible mid-leg option, especially if your next day is Franz Josef to Fox Glacier or the longer Fox Glacier to Wanaka drive.

Fuel and food along the way

Leave Greymouth with at least half a tank. Hokitika is only about 40 km south, usually 35 to 40 minutes in a camper, but it is the last proper service town before a long rural stretch. You will find fuel, supermarkets, bakeries and public toilets there.

After Hokitika, SH6 runs past lakes, lowland forest and small settlements. Ross is useful for a short break, but do not count on every small pump being open late. Harihari has limited services. Franz Josef has fuel and food, yet prices and opening hours can feel tighter than Greymouth or Hokitika.

For first-timers, this is a good leg to pair with First time driving a motorhome and Driving on the left in NZ. New Zealand keeps left. Give yourself more following distance than you would in a car, especially on wet chip-seal.

A quiet moment on the Greymouth to Franz Josef — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making, in order

  1. Hokitika: Stop for fuel, groceries and a beach walk. The driftwood and the Hokitika sign are close to town, so this is a low-effort stop with easy parking compared with tighter tourist streets further south.
  2. Lake Mahinapua: About 10 km south of Hokitika. The lake edge is a calm picnic stop, and Lake Mahinapua DOC Campsite is nearby if you are turning this into a slow West Coast night. Sandflies can be active, so keep insect repellent handy.
  3. Okarito turnoff: This is the only bigger diversion I would consider on a same-day drive. The turnoff is north of Franz Josef, with about 13 km each way to Okarito Lagoon. Go if the weather is clear and you still have daylight. Skip it if rain is closing in.

Hokitika Gorge is beautiful but it is not a quick roadside viewpoint. From Hokitika, allow roughly 45 minutes each way plus walking time. It works better if you overnight in Hokitika Holiday Park or nearby, rather than trying to bolt it onto a late Franz Josef arrival.

When not to make it a late-day run

Do not leave Greymouth late in heavy rain and expect an easy coast. SH6 can be slow when visibility drops, and the West Coast has a history of slips, surface flooding and temporary closures after strong rain. Winter does not normally mean snow chains on this coastal section, but June to August brings short daylight and colder shaded patches.

Also avoid linking this to a same-day Cook Strait ferry. The Interislander or Bluebridge crossing between Wellington and Picton takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, or roughly 3.5 hours with loading. Picton to Greymouth is already a long day. Adding Greymouth to Franz Josef after that is poor planning in a motorhome.

A compact 2-berth or 4-berth is the easiest size here. A 6-berth can do the route, but it needs more patience around one-lane bridges, wet corners and small car parks. Check the vehicle-size guide before assuming bigger is better.

2.5-hr SH6 south, Hokitika fuel, Lake Mahinapua stop.

What to do once you get to Franz Josef

Franz Josef is in the West Coast region, and it pays to arrive before dark. Parking, check-in and dinner are all easier while you can see the road markings and signs. Franz Josef Top 10 Holiday Park and Rainforest Retreat are common motorhome stops close to the village.

If the weather is clear, drive first to your campground, plug in or settle the van, then walk into town. The glacier valley walks are weather-dependent and can close after heavy rain or track damage. Do not treat them as guaranteed evening activities.

For the next leg, Franz Josef to Fox Glacier is short, but the road still deserves attention. If you are continuing south toward Wanaka, read the West Coast region notes and the practical fuel guide before you leave glacier country.

Greymouth to Franz Josef — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Greymouth to Franz Josef drive?
Yes. SH6 between Greymouth and Franz Josef is sealed and suitable for a 6-berth motorhome. The issue is not legality, it is comfort. A larger vehicle needs more room on wet bends, takes longer to accelerate after one-lane bridges and can be awkward at small viewpoints. If you are new to left-side driving, leave Greymouth early, keep stops simple and avoid the Okarito detour in poor weather.
Should we overnight in Hokitika or push through to Franz Josef?
Push through if you left Greymouth in the morning and only want Hokitika, Lake Mahinapua and perhaps Ross. Overnight in Hokitika if you want Hokitika Gorge, a proper beach sunset, or a slower first motorhome day. Hokitika Holiday Park keeps the day relaxed, then Franz Josef becomes an easy 135 km run the next morning. This is often smarter with children or after a long previous drive.
Is fuel cheaper in Greymouth or Hokitika?
It varies by day, so do not build the plan around a few cents. Greymouth usually gives you the simplest choice before leaving town, while Hokitika is the most useful mid-leg fuel stop. Franz Josef has fuel, but glacier towns can have shorter hours and less competition. In a motorhome, I would top up in Greymouth or Hokitika and arrive in Franz Josef without needing an evening fuel search.
