The Napier to Rotorua drive is one of the cleaner North Island links for a motorhome. It is about 219 km on SH5, with sealed two-lane road the whole way, but the middle section is hillier than many first-time visitors expect.

This leg fits neatly inside the North Island in 10 days route and the Rotorua + Tongariro loop. It also links Hawke's Bay with the Rotorua region, with February a good month if you want long daylight and settled conditions. Read it alongside First time driving a motorhome, especially if left-side driving is new to you.

The SH5 drive at a glance: distance, time, road

Allow 3 hr 10 min to 3 hr 25 min of pure driving from Napier to Rotorua. In a motorhome, with one viewpoint stop, one proper break, and a slow arrival into Rotorua traffic, plan on 4 to 4.5 hours.

  • Distance: about 219 km.
  • Main road: SH5, also signed as the Napier-Taupo Road and the Thermal Explorer Highway.
  • Surface: sealed two-lane highway, with some winding climbs and limited passing lanes.
  • High point: around Titiokura Saddle, about 708 m, not alpine like the South Island passes but still exposed in bad weather.

You do not need to drive down to the Lake Taupo waterfront unless you want lunch or a lake photo. SH5 lets you skirt Taupo and continue north toward Rotorua.

Same-day run or one night in the middle?

Most travellers should do Napier to Rotorua in one day. Leave Napier by 9:00, take two stops, and you can be parked in Rotorua by early afternoon. That gives time for a supermarket run, a soak, or a geothermal walk before dark.

Overnight in Taupo if you are leaving Napier late, travelling with children, or coming off a wine-heavy Hawke's Bay stay where nobody wants a 7:30 start. Taupo also makes sense if your wider plan continues to Tongariro National Park, because backtracking from Rotorua is inefficient.

A 2-berth or 4-berth is the easiest size on SH5. A 6-berth is fine, but it will feel wide on the bends north of Esk Valley and slower on the climbs. Check the motorhome size guide before choosing a large vehicle for a short North Island loop.

A quiet moment on the Napier to Rotorua — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making in order

  1. Waipunga Falls lookout: a roadside viewpoint on SH5, roughly halfway between Napier and Taupo. The parking is simple, the stop is quick, and the twin falls are worth five minutes even in average weather.
  2. Huka Falls: detour a few minutes off the direct line near Taupo. The car park can be busy, but turnover is fast. It is a better stop than trying to thread a large motorhome through Taupo lakefront traffic just for a photo.
  3. Wai-O-Tapu area: south of Rotorua, close to SH5. If you have two hours, the geothermal park is a proper visit. If you are short on time, use the public mud pool viewing area nearby and keep moving.

Kerosene Creek is sometimes suggested, but the access road can be rough and theft from parked vehicles has been reported over the years. I would not make it a default motorhome stop with luggage on board.

Fuel, food, and the quiet gaps

Fill in Napier if you are starting with less than half a tank. You will find Z Energy, BP, Mobil, and Caltex options around Napier and Hastings. Taupo is the main practical fuel and food stop on this route, with several large service stations and supermarkets.

Do not count on frequent services between Napier and Taupo. There are roadhouse-style stops, but hours can vary. After Taupo, the run to Rotorua is about 80 km, with Reporoa as the main small-town pause. If you are in a diesel motorhome, keep an eye on Road User Charges paperwork as well as the fuel gauge.

For trip budgeting, pair this leg with the Fuel economy and prices in NZ guide. Motorhomes drink more on SH5 than they do on flat motorway because of the climbs, bends, and repeated braking.

Winter and first-time driving notes

SH5 is not a snow-chain route in the same way as the Milford Road or the Crown Range, but it does get winter ice, fog, heavy rain, and occasional closures, especially around the higher Napier-Taupo section. In June, July, and August, check Waka Kotahi road conditions before leaving Napier.

New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months; if your licence is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit or approved translation. Take the first 30 minutes gently out of Napier. The road narrows and climbs before you have fully settled into the vehicle.

In Rotorua, Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park is a practical motorhome base, and the Rotorua region page is the better next read if you are deciding between geothermal parks, lake stops, and an onward drive to Tongariro.

Napier to Rotorua — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Napier to Rotorua drive?
Yes. A 6-berth can drive SH5 between Napier and Rotorua, and the road is sealed the whole way. The trade-off is comfort. The Napier-Taupo section has bends, climbs, and some narrow shoulders, so a larger motorhome needs more patience and wider turning space at stops. Use passing lanes when they appear, keep left, and avoid pulling onto soft gravel verges after rain.
Should we overnight in Taupo or push through to Rotorua?
Push through if you leave Napier in the morning and Rotorua is your planned base for the next two nights. Overnight in Taupo if you start after lunch, want Huka Falls plus a lake walk, or are linking this leg with Tongariro National Park. Taupo breaks the drive nicely, but it adds a packing-up morning if Rotorua is where your geothermal activities are booked.
Is fuel cheaper in Taupo than Napier or Rotorua?
Fuel pricing moves too often to promise that Taupo will be cheaper. What Taupo does give you is choice: several large stations, easy access from SH5, and a sensible place to top up before the final 80 km to Rotorua. I would not run low hoping for a better price later. In a motorhome, convenience and turning space often matter more than a small pump difference.
