Nelson to Westport motorhome drive on SH6

The Nelson to Westport drive is the cleanest entry from Nelson into the West Coast. It is about 222 km on SH6, with 3 hours 30 minutes of pure driving and 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours if you stop properly.
The road is sealed all the way. It is also narrower and more winding than many first-time visitors expect, especially through the Buller Gorge. This leg often sits inside a South Island in 14 days plan or a North to South in 21 days route after the Picton ferry and Nelson.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel
From central Nelson, follow SH6 through Richmond, Wakefield, Murchison and the Buller Gorge to Westport. The distance is roughly 222 km. Allow 3 hours 30 minutes without meaningful stops. In a motorhome, plan 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours.
SH6 crosses Hope Saddle at about 634 m before dropping toward Kawatiri and Murchison. It is not an alpine pass like Arthur's Pass or the Lindis, but winter frosts and shaded corners still matter. After heavy rain, the Buller Gorge can see slips, surface water and short delays.
Fuel is easiest in Nelson or Richmond before you leave. Z Energy and Mobil are common around the Nelson and Richmond side. Murchison is the sensible mid-route fuel and food stop. Do not assume every small settlement in the gorge has fuel, toilets and coffee.
For size, a 2-berth or 4-berth is more relaxed here. A 6-berth can do the road, but you will take corners slower, use more pull-outs, and feel the narrow sections through the gorge. If this is one of your first New Zealand driving days, read the First time driving a motorhome guide and remember that NZ drives on the left.
Three stops worth making
Keep the stops simple. This is a transit day with good scenery, not a day for five detours.
- Wakefield or Belgrove: good early pause after leaving Nelson traffic. Use it to settle into left-side driving before the road becomes more rural.
- Kawatiri Historic Railway Walk: a short, easy leg-stretch near the old rail formation. It is useful if you have children or anyone getting stiff in the back.
- Murchison: the main service town. Fuel, food, toilets and a good decision point. If the weather is closing in, this is where you slow the day down.
- Buller Gorge Swingbridge area: a paid stop if you want a longer break, or simply continue through the gorge and use safe signed pull-outs. Do not stop on blind bends for photos.
Hawks Crag is the famous rock overhang section in the Lower Buller Gorge. Treat it as a driving feature, not a stopping place. Keep left, stay slow, and give trucks room.
The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.
The two recommended pace options
Same-day pace: leave Nelson by 9 am, stop at Kawatiri, have lunch or coffee in Murchison, then roll into Westport mid-afternoon. This works well in March, when daylight is still generous and the West Coast is a little less crowded than January.
Overnight in the middle: stay around Murchison if you are coming off a long previous day from Picton, Abel Tasman, or Golden Bay. It also makes sense if you collected the motorhome that morning and are still learning the vehicle.
If your wider trip is South Island in 10 days, same-day is usually the right call. If you are on a slower West Coast and Nelson loop, one night near Murchison gives the Buller River more breathing room.
When not to run it late
Do not plan Nelson to Westport after a late Cook Strait ferry day. The Interislander or Bluebridge crossing between Wellington and Picton is about 3 hours 20 minutes on the water, closer to 3.5 hours with loading and unloading. Picton to Nelson then adds about 2 hours by road. By that point, Westport is too far for a calm first day.
In winter, check the road status before leaving Nelson. Hope Saddle can be frosty, and the Buller Gorge is shaded in places. Snow closures are less common than on higher South Island passes, but slips and ice are realistic. Carry chains if your rental conditions require them for winter South Island travel, and know how to fit them before you need them.
Foreign licences in English are generally valid for up to 12 months in New Zealand. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or approved translation. The Driving on the left in NZ guide is worth ten minutes before this leg.
4-hr SH6 south via Buller Gorge, West Coast entry.
What to do once you get to Westport
Westport is the northern door of the West Coast region. Top up fuel, groceries and water here before turning south toward Greymouth, Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. The West Coast distances look short on a map, but rain, road works and photo stops stretch the day.
If you arrive early, drive out to Cape Foulwind and Tauranga Bay for the seal colony walk. It is about 15 km from Westport and far easier without rushing. For overnighting, use a legal campground or holiday park unless you have confirmed local freedom camping rules for your vehicle's self-containment status.
This leg pairs naturally with the Nelson region page before you leave and the West Coast region guide once you arrive. It also links cleanly into the longer South Island in 14 days route.
