Picton has a particular ferry-morning feel: gulls over the marina, a kettle somewhere in the van park, and everyone quietly working out which cupboard the tea bags ended up in. Once you are pointed south, the road soon settles into that long coastal rhythm.

The Picton to Christchurch drive is the classic SH1 coastal run after the Cook Strait ferry. It is about 337 km, mostly good sealed highway, with the most memorable section north and south of Kaikoura where the road sits tight between cliffs, rail line, and sea.

Plan on 5 hours 15 minutes of pure driving in a motorhome. With fuel, food, seal-viewing, and a proper Kaikoura stop, it becomes 6.5 to 7.5 hours. This leg fits neatly inside South Island in 10 days, South Island in 14 days, and the longer North to South in 21 days route, especially in February when daylight is on your side.

The drive at a glance: distance, time, fuel

From Picton ferry terminal to central Christchurch, stay on SH1 almost the whole way: Picton, Blenheim, Seddon, Ward, Kaikoura, Cheviot, Waipara, then Christchurch. There is no named alpine pass on this leg, so you avoid the chain issues of Arthur's Pass or the Lindis Pass, but the Kaikoura coast still deserves respect in rough weather.

  • Distance: about 337 km.
  • Pure driving: 5 hours to 5 hours 15 minutes in a medium motorhome.
  • Realistic with stops: 6.5 to 7.5 hours.
  • Road: SH1, sealed all the way, with passing lanes but also narrow coastal sections.
  • Recommended vehicle size: 2-berth or 4-berth is easiest. A 6-berth is fine, but slower through roadworks, rail crossings, and tight parking in Kaikoura.

Fuel is easy at the top end. Z Energy and BP in Blenheim are useful before the longer rural stretch. Kaikoura has Caltex and Allied options. Do not roll out of Picton after a ferry with the warning light already on.

The two recommended pace options

Same-day drive: Works well if your ferry arrives in Picton before midday, everyone has slept, and the weather forecast is ordinary rather than ugly. Leave Picton, fuel in Blenheim, stop at Ohau Point, take lunch or a walk in Kaikoura, then continue to Christchurch before dark. The same-day version saves a night, but it can turn Kaikoura into a windscreen view if the ferry is late or the children are done.

One night in the middle: Better if you arrive on an afternoon Cook Strait Interislander or Bluebridge sailing. The Wellington to Picton crossing is 3 hours 20 minutes on the water, closer to 3.5 hours once loading and unloading are part of your day. Add a supermarket shop and motorhome familiarisation, and Christchurch becomes a long ask.

Kaikoura Top 10 is the simple overnight choice if you want power, laundry, and town access. Peketa Beach Holiday Park sits south of town and feels more coastal. This slower version also fits the Kaikoura + Marlborough Sounds route rather than treating the coast as a transit day.

A quiet moment on the Picton to Christchurch — motorhome drive guide route

The slow part of this route is the part you'll remember. Build in at least one short evening where the kettle is the only sound — no driving, no plan, just the awning open and the day unwinding.

Three stops worth making, in order

1. Blenheim for fuel and food. It is only 28 km from Picton, about 30 minutes, but it is the practical reset. Fill fuel, buy groceries, and check the wind before the open country through Seddon and Ward.

2. Ohau Point seal viewing area. North of Kaikoura, this is the quick coastal stop that is actually worth the brake pedal. Use the marked parking. Do not stop on the shoulder for photos. SH1 here was heavily rebuilt after the 2016 earthquake, and the modern road is good, but it still has rockfall zones, tunnels, rail crossings, and occasional stop-go work.

You will know you have found the right pause when the van door opens to salt air, seal calls, and the small hush everyone makes before taking a photo.

3. Kaikoura Peninsula. If you have 60 to 90 minutes, drive into town rather than just using the highway café strip. The peninsula viewpoints give you sea, mountains, and a proper leg stretch. Whale-watch trips need more time, usually turning this into an overnight or very late Christchurch arrival.

Ferry-day timing and when not to push on

Do not plan Picton to Christchurch as an easy add-on after a late ferry. If you roll off in Picton after 2 pm in winter, or after 3 pm in summer with children on board, stay in Picton, Blenheim, or Kaikoura. Fatigue is the bigger risk than the road itself.

Winter does not usually bring snow to SH1 on this route, and snow chains are not normally part of the Picton to Christchurch conversation. The real winter issues are short daylight, wet corners, coastal wind, and occasional closures after slips or crashes. Check Waka Kotahi journey updates before leaving Picton.

5-hr SH1 via Kaikoura — coastal, post-earthquake highway, whale-watch detour.

Arriving in Christchurch: parking, sleep, next leg

Christchurch is the destination region for this leg, not just a place to return a vehicle. If you arrive late, avoid threading a large motorhome through the central city while tired. North South Holiday Park near the airport is practical for pickups, returns, and early flights. South Brighton Holiday Park suits travellers who want the coast and a quieter first night.

For the next day, Christchurch works as the launch point for Christchurch to Lake Tekapo, Christchurch to Queenstown, or a slower South Island in 14 days loop. If you are heading inland, sort groceries and dump station jobs here. Fuel can be easier to compare in the city than in smaller South Island towns, but do not waste an hour crossing town to save a small amount.

Picton to Christchurch — motorhome drive guide FAQ

Can a 6-berth motorhome do the Picton to Christchurch drive in one day?
Yes, a 6-berth can do Picton to Christchurch in one day, provided you start early and accept a slower pace. The issue is not clearance or road surface. It is fatigue, parking, and narrow coastal sections around Kaikoura. Allow 7 hours with stops rather than trying to drive it like a car. If your ferry reaches Picton after lunch, overnighting in Kaikoura is the calmer plan.
Should we overnight in Kaikoura or push through to Christchurch?
Overnight in Kaikoura if you arrive off an afternoon ferry, want a whale-watch trip, or are still getting used to a motorhome. Push through only when your ferry lands in the morning and the forecast is settled. Kaikoura breaks the leg almost perfectly: Picton to Kaikoura is about 157 km, then Kaikoura to Christchurch is about 181 km the next day.
Is fuel cheaper in Blenheim or Christchurch?
Christchurch often has more competition, so it can be cheaper, but fuel pricing moves and it is not worth running low along SH1 to chase a few cents. Fill or top up in Blenheim if you left Picton light. Kaikoura is a safe mid-route backup. For a motorhome, the better saving is steady driving, fewer hard accelerations, and not carrying unnecessary water weight all day.
