Alexandra Holiday Park is an independent Central Otago park on the Manuherikia side of town, useful when you want a proper reset between Queenstown, Wanaka and the dry SH8 fruit-bowl country.
It suits motorhomes that need power, laundry and a tank dump more than scenery-at-the-door. Get the regional plan that pairs Alexandra Holiday Park with the two DOC sites within 30 minutes, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.
Where it is, and who it suits
The park sits about 1.5 km from Alexandra town centre, roughly 20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by motorhome for groceries, cafes and fuel. Otago Central Rail Trail access is close, about 500 m to 800 m depending on your gate and path choice, so it is easy to walk or ride without shifting the van.
This is a sensible stop on the Queenstown + Fiordland loop when you want a quieter night after the Queenstown region. It also works on a Queenstown to Mount Cook drive if you are avoiding a long first day.
What you get for the price
Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, with winter and shoulder months noticeably lower. Expect normal holiday-park facilities: shared kitchen, dining or lounge space, showers, laundry, barbecue area, a seasonal swimming pool, Wi-Fi that is fine for messages but not something to build a work call around, and an on-site dump station for staying guests.
Most standard 6 m to 7.5 m motorhomes are straightforward here. If you are driving a longer 8 m plus vehicle, ask for a suitable site before arrival rather than assuming every bay has easy swing room. Dogs may be accepted by arrangement, often with tighter rules in peak weeks, so check before relying on it.
How early to book
January is the pressure month. Alexandra is hot, dry and popular with families, cycle-trail riders and people using it as a cheaper base than Queenstown or Wanaka. For late December through January, sort a powered site several weeks ahead, earlier if your stay overlaps New Year.
In March, April and November you usually have more room to move, though weekends still tighten when events are on. If you are comparing Holiday parks vs DOC campsites, use Conroys Dam Campsite and Butchers Dam Campsite as basic DOC backups within about 10-15 km, not like-for-like substitutes.
What's nearby — day-trip reach
For one night, walk the river track, restock food, empty tanks and ride a short section of the Otago Central Rail Trail. For two nights, add Clyde, 9 km and 10-12 minutes by road, or Cromwell, 28 km and about 25 minutes via SH8. Queenstown is around 95 km away, but allow 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes because the Kawarau Gorge section can slow larger vans.
First-timers often underestimate the heat and the wind here. Park with the afternoon sun in mind, peg awnings properly, and fill fresh water before heading to more basic sites. The nearest fuel is in Alexandra town, about 1.5-2 km away.
