Haast is not a resort stop. It is the practical overnight between the West Coast glaciers and Wanaka, especially if you are crossing SH6 over Haast Pass, 564 m, in a motorhome.

Haast River Motels and Holiday Park is an independent park near Haast Junction. It suits travellers who want power, showers, laundry and a tank dump before the longer run to Fox Glacier, Franz Josef or Wanaka.

Get the regional plan that pairs Haast Holiday Park with the two DOC sites within 30 minutes, Haast Beach Campsite and Pleasant Flat Campsite, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.

Where it is, and who it suits

The park sits just off SH6 near Haast Junction, about 4 km from the small Haast township service area. That is roughly 5 minutes by vehicle, or about 50 minutes on foot, and the walk is not pleasant after dark because there is no proper town footpath for most of it.

It works well on the South Island in 14 days route, where Haast breaks up the Fox Glacier to Wanaka drive. Fox Glacier to Haast is about 125 km and 1 hour 45 minutes in real motorhome time. Haast to Wanaka is about 145 km and 2 hours 15 minutes, longer if you stop at Thunder Creek Falls, Fantail Falls and Lake Hawea.

The nearest headline stop north is Ship Creek, about 30 km and 25 minutes away. Eastbound, the Gates of Haast and Thunder Creek Falls sit on the pass road, roughly 45 to 55 km away depending on the stop.

What you get for the price

For a powered site for two adults, expect the peak summer band to sit around NZ$55-75 a night, with winter and quiet shoulder dates noticeably lower. That moves with school holidays, public holidays and how full the West Coast is after a run of fine weather.

On site you are paying for the practical things: communal kitchen, lounge space, coin or card laundry, showers, powered sites, an on-site dump station for guests and basic Wi-Fi. Treat the Wi-Fi as useful for messages, weather and route checks, not for long video calls. Mobile coverage around Haast can drop quickly once you drive into the bush or up the pass.

Nearest fuel is in Haast, about 4 km away. Do not leave Haast low on diesel. The next comfortable fuel options are well spaced, especially if you are heading through Makarora to Wanaka.

Powered vs unpowered sites

Powered sites are worth it here more often than at beach parks. West Coast weather is damp, and a powered site lets you run the heater, charge devices, dry wet jackets and start the pass day with a full house battery.

Unpowered sites suit self-contained vans that only need a shower and kitchen access. If your motorhome is over 7 m, ask for a site with easy turning rather than assuming every corner will be comfortable. Bigger vans fit in Haast, but not every site is equal after rain.

Use the Holiday parks vs DOC campsites guide for the trade-off. Haast Beach Campsite gives you a cheaper, simpler night near the coast. Pleasant Flat Campsite is better if you want to wake up already on the Wanaka side of the pass approach. Neither gives you the same plug-in, laundry and dump-station convenience.

How early to book

January needs a booking. So do the Christmas-New Year weeks and long weekends, because Haast has limited beds and sites for the number of vehicles using SH6. March is usually easier, and it is one of the better West Coast months for a motorhome trip, but I would still avoid turning up late in the day without a Plan B.

For February and March, a week or two ahead is often enough outside public holidays. For January, think several weeks ahead, earlier if you need a powered site for a large vehicle or you are travelling as two vans together. In winter, booking is less about capacity and more about checking reception hours and services.

Common gotchas first-timers do not expect

Haast looks small on the map, but the distances around it are not small. NZ drives on the left, SH6 has one-lane bridges, and Haast Pass can feel narrow in rain even though it is not a high alpine pass by South Island standards.

  • Dogs: treat the park as dog-friendly by prior arrangement on campsites, not automatic. Confirm before arrival and keep dogs away from shared facilities.
  • Food: bring dinner supplies from Wanaka, Fox Glacier or Hokitika if you are particular. Haast has limited evening choice.
  • Sandflies: they are real at dusk, especially near bush and water. Pack repellent.
  • Freedom camping: do not assume a river pull-off is legal. Check the Freedom camping South Island guide and local signs.

For wider planning, pair this page with the West Coast region guide, the March when-to-go notes and the vehicle-size guide if you are choosing between a compact 2-berth and a larger family motorhome.

Haast Pass area holiday parks — motorhome stay guide FAQ

Do I need to book in January?
Yes, book January rather than treating Haast as a casual stop. The town is small, SH6 funnels almost everyone through the same overnight choices, and powered sites can disappear when weather pushes travellers off DOC campsites. If you are arriving after 5 pm, travelling in a 7 m-plus motorhome, or needing two sites together, book earlier. March is calmer, but I would still check ahead.
Are powered sites really worth it at Haast?
Usually, yes. Haast is a wet-coast stop, not just a place to sleep. Power helps with heating, charging, fridge recovery, camera batteries and drying clothes after glacier or rainforest walks. If you are fully self-contained and the forecast is settled, an unpowered site or a DOC campsite can work. For first-timers crossing Haast Pass the next morning, powered is the lower-stress choice.
Can I dump tanks here without staying?
The park has a dump station for guests, but do not assume casual dump access if you are not staying. Ask reception first, and expect a fee or a no if they are busy. The safer planning habit is to empty when you are already paying for a powered site. Check the Dump stations South Island map before leaving Fox Glacier, Haast or Wanaka, because gaps feel longer in this part of the Coast.
