Hokitika Holiday Park suits motorhome travellers who want a proper reset on the West Coast: plug in, wash clothes, empty tanks, cook under cover, then head into town for greenstone shops and the beach sunset.

It is a Kiwi Holiday Parks member on the northern side of Hokitika, useful on the South Island in 14 days route between Greymouth and the glacier country. February is the pressure month here, especially when the coast is dry.

Get the regional plan that pairs Hokitika Holiday Park with the two DOC sites within 30 minutes, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.

Where it is, and who it suits

The park is about 1.5 km from Hokitika town centre, roughly 4 minutes by vehicle or 20 minutes on foot depending on your pace and weather. Hokitika Beach and the driftwood sign are around 2 km away, so walkable in daylight but less fun in heavy West Coast rain.

It works well for travellers coming down SH6 from Greymouth, 40 km and about 35 minutes, or heading south toward Franz Josef, 135 km and about 2 hours 10 minutes in real motorhome time.

What you get for the price

Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, noticeably lower in winter and shoulder months. That buys convenience more than scenery: communal kitchen, TV lounge, laundry, playground space, Wi-Fi that is fine for messages but not something I would rely on for long video calls, and an on-site dump station for guests.

There is no hot-pool reason to pick this park. If a pool is listed for your dates, check directly, because May on the West Coast is not a swimming-trip assumption.

Powered vs unpowered sites

Powered is worth it here if you have had two DOC nights in a row, are running a fridge hard, or need a heater on a damp evening. Unpowered can be fine for a newer self-contained motorhome in mild weather, but the West Coast is where solar optimism often meets cloud.

The nearest practical dump point is the park’s own station if you are staying. Fuel and supermarket supplies are in central Hokitika, about 2 km away and a 5-minute drive.

Best for families, couples, solo, and dogs

Families get the most from the park because the shared areas, laundry and play facilities make a one-night stop easier. Couples and solo travellers use it more as a tidy service night before a quieter DOC stay.

Dogs are usually accepted on sites by prior arrangement, with lead rules and seasonal limits possible, so do not arrive with a pet without checking. If you are driving a 7 m plus motorhome, tell the park when you enquire. Most sites are workable, but not every bay suits a long rear overhang.

What's nearby: day-trip reach

Hokitika Gorge is the obvious half-day trip, about 33 km inland and 35-40 minutes each way. The road is sealed but narrower than SH6, with local traffic and one-lane bridges, so take the left-side driving seriously.

For backup camping, DOC’s Lake Mahinapua Campsite is about 10 km south, and Goldsborough Campsite is roughly 20 km north-east near Kumara. Use the West Coast region guide, the Holiday parks vs DOC campsites guide, and the South Island in 14 days route to decide whether Hokitika is your service night or your base for two.

Hokitika Holiday Park — motorhome stay guide FAQ

Do I need to book in January?
Yes, I would. January and early February are when Hokitika fills with domestic summer travel, cycle tourists, and international motorhome traffic moving between Nelson, Greymouth and the glaciers. A powered site is not impossible at short notice, but your choice narrows fast. If you need a dog-friendly site, a large motorhome bay, or two nights together, start checking several weeks ahead.
Are powered sites really worth it in Hokitika?
Often, yes. The West Coast is damp, cloudy and hard on batteries if you have been using lights, fridge, chargers and heating. A powered site lets you reset before driving south to Franz Josef or north to Punakaiki. If you have a modern self-contained motorhome and only need one mild night, unpowered can work, but I would not plan several unpowered nights here in wet weather.
Can I dump tanks here without staying?
Assume the dump station is for staying guests unless the office confirms otherwise. Some holiday parks allow non-guests to dump for a small fee, some do not, and rules can change during busy periods. If tank emptying is the reason for stopping, phone first or use a listed public dump station on your route. Never empty grey water into roadside drains or campground grass.
