Kerikeri holiday parks: motorhome stay guide

Kerikeri works well as a quieter Bay of Islands base if you want fruit stalls, fuel, groceries, and historic sites without sleeping in busier Paihia. The main Kerikeri holiday park option is an independent park, not a chain, with powered sites, basic shared facilities, and a practical location close to town.
Get the regional plan that pairs Kerikeri Holiday Park with the two DOC sites within 30 minutes, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.
Where it is, and who it suits
Kerikeri Holiday Park sits on Aranga Road, about 1 km from the town centre. Allow 12 to 15 minutes on foot for cafés, the supermarket, pharmacy, and small-town errands. Fuel is nearby on Kerikeri Road and around the Waipapa Road end of town, usually 1 to 3 km depending on which forecourt you use.
The Stone Store and Kemp House are about 2.3 km away, around 5 minutes by motorhome or 30 minutes on foot. Rainbow Falls is roughly 4 km away, a 7 to 10 minute drive. Paihia and Waitangi are about 24 km south-east, usually 25 to 30 minutes on SH10 and local roads.
This suits travellers on the Bay of Islands round-trip who want a calmer overnight stop than the waterfront towns. It also suits first-timers who need laundry, a dump station, and a reset night after driving north from Auckland.
What you get for the price
Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, with noticeably lower rates in winter and shoulder months. January is the month that catches visitors out. School holidays, Northland humidity, and limited powered inventory all arrive at once.
Expect the useful holiday-park basics rather than resort polish: communal kitchen, shared lounge or TV area, bathrooms, laundry, barbecue space, Wi-Fi, and a dump station for staying guests. Wi-Fi is fine for messages and route checking. Do not plan your work calls around it when the park is full.
There is usually room for standard 2-berth and 4-berth motorhomes. If your vehicle is over about 7.5 m, or you are towing, check the site length before you commit. Older Northland parks can have trees, tighter corners, and softer grass after rain.
Powered vs unpowered sites
Powered is worth it here if you are running a fridge hard in summer, charging cameras and phones, or using fans overnight. Kerikeri can feel warm and still in January and February. A powered site also gives you an easy full-battery reset before heading to smaller camps.
Unpowered can work for one night in a certified self-contained camper if your battery is healthy and you are not using much 240 V gear. It is less forgiving after two cloudy days, especially if you have been parked under trees.
If you are comparing this stop with DOC options, read Holiday parks vs DOC campsites before deciding. DOC Puketi Recreation Area Campsite is the main forest-style backup near Kerikeri, about 25 to 30 km away depending on your route. Urupukapuka Bay Campsite is also DOC, but it is an island campsite reached by boat from Paihia, so it is not a motorhome substitute.
How early to book
For late December and January, book Kerikeri powered sites as soon as your Bay of Islands dates are firm. Four to six weeks ahead can still work in shoulder season, but it is thin for the New Year period. Waitangi Day week in early February also tightens up around Paihia, Kerikeri, and Russell.
March, April, October, and November are kinder. You still should not roll in at 6 pm expecting a powered site if rain has pushed freedom campers into town. Freedom camping Northland rules vary by district, and self-containment certification does not mean you can stop anywhere.
Common gotchas first-timers don't expect
New Zealand drives on the left, and Northland roads are slower than the map suggests. Auckland to Kerikeri is about 245 km, but allow 4 to 4.5 hours in a motorhome with a fuel and food stop. SH1 north of Whangārei has bends, roadworks, and slower holiday traffic.
Dogs are usually by prior arrangement at independent parks like this, and conditions can change over peak dates. Ask before turning up with a dog. Many travellers also assume dump stations are public. Here, use the park dump station if you are staying, and check the Dump stations and water fills guide for alternatives before you arrive with full grey water.
