Ōhope Beach Holiday Park suits travellers who want a proper beach stop, not just a place to plug in. It is a Top 10 park at the quieter eastern end of Ōhope, with surf on one side and Ōhiwa Harbour close by.
It fits well on a North Island in 10 days route between Rotorua and the East Coast. January is tight here, especially for powered sites near the beach.
Get the regional plan that pairs Ōhope Beach with the two DOC day sites within 30 minutes, Ōhope Scenic Reserve and Tauwhare Pā Scenic Reserve, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.
Where it is, and who it suits
Ōhope Beach Holiday Park sits around 6 km east of Ōhope village, usually 7 to 10 minutes by road, and about 12 km from Whakatāne town centre, allow 15 to 20 minutes in a motorhome. The beach is effectively at the gate, around 100 m and 2 minutes on foot. Ōhiwa Harbour is also close, roughly 600 m to 1 km depending on your site and path choice.
This is a good first or second night after the Auckland to Rotorua drive if you want the coast without pushing too far. Rotorua to Ōhope is about 110 km, normally 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours via SH30 and SH2. New Zealand drives on the left, and SH2 into Whakatāne has real bends, so do not treat it as motorway driving.
What you get for the price
Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, with winter and some shoulder-season nights noticeably lower. Exact rates move with weekends, school holidays and site position, so use that band as planning sense rather than a promise.
On site you should expect the normal Top 10 setup: communal kitchen, BBQ areas, lounge or TV space, laundry, playground facilities, Wi-Fi that is fine for messages but not something I would rely on for long video calls, plus a dump station for staying guests. The pool and hot-pool style facilities are part of why families like this park, but always check current opening notes if that matters to your May or winter plan.
Powered vs unpowered sites
For a rented motorhome, a powered site is usually worth it here. You can charge house batteries, run the fridge without thinking, dry towels after the beach, and use a small heater or fan if your vehicle allows it. Two nights on power also resets the van properly before you move inland again.
Unpowered can work for a certified self-contained vehicle in good weather, especially if you are only staying one night. It is less comfortable if you have kids, a CPAP machine, camera batteries, or wet gear. Larger 6-berth vehicles should also ask about site access and turning room before arrival. A 7 m motorhome is normal in New Zealand, but not every corner of every holiday park feels generous.
How early to book
For late December and January, book Ōhope as early as you can once your route shape is settled. Four to six months out is sensible for a powered site. Leaving it until two weeks before New Year is how people end up 30 minutes away from the beach they actually wanted.
February is easier but still popular. March, April and November are more forgiving, unless a long weekend or school holiday lands in your week. If you are weighing this against a DOC-style night, read Holiday parks vs DOC campsites first. The key point for Ōhope is that there are no DOC vehicle campsites within 30 km, so your backup plan is usually another commercial park or a legal council option, not a forest campsite just up the road.
Nearby fuel, walks and 1-2 night plans
Fill fuel in Whakatāne before you settle in. It is the practical service town, with supermarkets, fuel stations and the better choice for groceries. If you need a dump station and you are not staying at the park, check the current Whakatāne public dump point before relying on it; the Dump stations and water fills guide is the right practical cross-check.
For one night, arrive mid-afternoon, walk the beach, cook at the park and leave after a swim or harbour wander. For two nights, add Ōhope Scenic Reserve, Tauwhare Pā Scenic Reserve, or a Whakatāne waterfront morning. Moutohorā Whale Island trips leave from Whakatāne, about 12 km away, but they are weather-dependent and need more planning than a casual beach walk.
The park is not a dependable dog-friendly choice. Like many Top 10 parks, pets are normally by prior approval, often restricted by season, site type and school-holiday rules. If travelling with a dog, ask before building your Rotorua region plan around this stop.
