Opotiki Holiday Park is an independent holiday park in Ōpōtiki, useful for motorhome travellers crossing the eastern Bay of Plenty on SH2 and the Pacific Coast Highway. It suits a 1 or 2 night reset: plug in, wash clothes, empty tanks, walk into town, then choose between the coast, the Motu Trails, or the Waioeka Gorge.
It sits on the eastern edge of our Rotorua region planning area and works neatly on the North Island in 10 days route, especially if your January plan needs one serviced night between Rotorua, Whakatāne, and Gisborne.
Get the regional plan that pairs Opotiki Holiday Park with the two DOC sites within 30 minutes, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.
Where it is, and who it suits
The park is close to central Ōpōtiki, about 1 km from the main shops and cafés, usually a 12 to 15 minute walk without rushing. Fuel is also close in town, so you are not committing to the Waioeka Gorge or the East Cape road with a half tank.
For motorhomes, the appeal is practical rather than scenic. You get town access, a dump station, water, laundry, and a flat base before or after longer rural driving. Ōpōtiki to Rotorua is about 135 km and 2 hours via SH30 and SH33. Ōpōtiki to Gisborne on SH2 through the Waioeka Gorge is about 145 km and 2 hours 15 minutes, longer if you stop or meet roadworks.
What you get for the price
Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, with winter and quiet shoulder weeks noticeably lower. Treat that as a planning band, not a fixed rate, because New Zealand holiday parks move pricing around school holidays and long weekends.
On site, expect the useful basics: communal kitchen, TV or lounge space, laundry, showers, barbecue areas, Wi-Fi, and a dump station for guests. Wi-Fi in small-town parks can be fine for messages and maps, then slow down once everyone starts uploading photos after dinner. There is usually a pool-style summer amenity here, but do not pick the park only for swimming outside the warmer months without checking current opening dates.
Powered vs unpowered sites
Most first-time motorhome travellers should choose powered here. It lets you recharge house batteries, run the fridge without watching the gauge, use the heater or fan properly, and reset after a DOC night. If you are comparing this with the Holiday parks vs DOC campsites guide, this is the serviced-night option, not the wilderness-feel option.
If your vehicle is over 7 m, or you are travelling with bikes on the back, say so when you contact the park. Larger vans are common in New Zealand, but the difference between a tidy arrival and a stressful one is often whether the office puts you on a site with an easy swing.
How early to book
January is the pressure month. Book well ahead for the first half of January, Bay of Plenty Anniversary periods, Easter, and any weekend that lines up with school holidays. For a normal March, April, October, or November weekday, you often have more room to move, but do not arrive late in the day assuming powered sites will still be sitting empty.
Dog rules need checking before you build the stop into your route. Opotiki Holiday Park is more flexible than many town-centre parks, but pets are normally by arrangement and may be restricted in peak periods. Do not assume a dog is accepted just because you are in a self-contained motorhome.
What's nearby — day-trip reach
The Motu Trails are the main reason active travellers pause here. The Dunes Trail is close to town, with easy coastal riding, while stronger cyclists look further toward the Motu Road and Pakihi Track logistics. Hukutaia Domain is about 8 km and 10 minutes by road for a short forest walk around an important pūriri tree.
For backup camping, check current DOC access and conditions for Tauranga Bridge and Oponae in the Waioeka Gorge area. They are simpler than a holiday park, with toilets rather than full facilities, and they suit travellers who have already read the Freedom camping in NZ and self-containment rules. New Zealand drives on the left, and SH2 through the gorge needs your attention: narrow bends, trucks, slips after heavy rain, and very few easy places to turn around.
