Punakaiki Beach Camp is the practical overnight stop if you want Pancake Rocks at dusk or early morning without driving SH6 in the dark. It is an independent holiday park, not part of a chain, and it sits between the Tasman Sea, the Pororari River and the small Punakaiki village.
This page suits travellers weighing it against a DOC-style stop or a bigger town park in Greymouth or Westport. Get the West Coast regional plan that pairs Punakaiki Beach Camp with Fox River Campsite and the next practical DOC backup north, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.
Where it is, and who it suits
Punakaiki Beach Camp is just off SH6, about 44 km north of Greymouth (40 to 45 minutes) and 56 km south of Westport (55 to 65 minutes). The small village centre is roughly 300 to 500 m away, a 5 to 7 minute walk depending on your pitch. Pancake Rocks and the blowholes are about 1 km away, usually 12 to 15 minutes on foot.
It suits a South Island in 14 days itinerary where you are linking Nelson, the West Coast and the glaciers without turning every day into a long haul. February is the month I would be most careful with timing here. The West Coast is busy, daylight is long, and the best-powered sites go first.
What you get for the price
Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$60-80 in summer peak, with winter and quiet shoulder weeks noticeably lower. The value is mostly location. You are paying to park walking distance from Pancake Rocks, not for a resort-style facility list.
On site, expect the usual holiday park basics: communal kitchen, shared lounge area, toilets and showers, laundry, Wi-Fi that can be patchy when the park is full, and a dump station for guests. There is no pool or hot pool. If hot water, laundry and a proper recharge night matter, read the Holiday parks vs DOC campsites guide before assuming a basic DOC stop will do the same job.
Powered sites and vehicle size reality
Powered sites are worth it here if you have been off-grid around Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes or the upper West Coast. West Coast weather can turn damp fast, and a powered night lets you run heating, dry gear, charge devices and reset the fridge without watching the house battery.
Long motorhomes should mention length when booking. Access from SH6 is straightforward, but individual sites vary, and turning space near trees or busy communal areas can feel tighter than it looks on a map. A large 6-berth is workable if the park knows you are coming. It is less fun if you arrive late and the remaining site is awkward.
Day-trip reach and backup stops
For walks, you are close to the Pancake Rocks loop, Truman Track and the Pororari River Track entrance. Paparoa National Park starts almost at the edge of the village, but remember that national park tracks are not dog-friendly.
Fox River Campsite, a basic DOC-style option, is about 12 km north, roughly 12 to 15 minutes by road. There is not a deep bench of DOC camping backups within 30 km of Punakaiki, so do not leave your January plan to chance. Berlins Flat Campsite is much farther north in the Buller Gorge area, about 73 km away and around 1 hour 10 minutes in normal conditions.
There is no reliable fuel stop to build a plan around in Punakaiki. Fill in Greymouth or Westport. For dump stations, use the camp facilities if staying, or plan around Greymouth and Westport if you are passing through.
Common gotchas first-timers don't expect
SH6 along this coast is beautiful but slow. It is not a motorway. Allow more time than the distance suggests, especially after rain, in wind, or behind freight. New Zealand drives on the left, and a foreign licence in English is valid for up to 12 months. If your licence is not in English, carry an International Driving Permit or approved translation.
Dogs may be accepted only by arrangement and often with seasonal restrictions, so do not arrive with one unconfirmed. Also check your self-containment certificate if you are thinking of a backup outside a holiday park. Freedom camping rules on the West Coast are location-specific and not the same as simply being able to sleep anywhere.
