A quiet moment exploring things to do in Auckland

Things To Do in Auckland is a story told in small moments — the cafe that opens at 7am, the side road nobody else takes, the view that catches you off-guard. Slow down enough to find them.

Auckland is not hard in a motorhome, but the city centre is the wrong place to learn how tall and wide your vehicle is. Treat the CBD as a park-once area, then use ferries, walking, buses, or a short taxi ride.

This guide starts from Auckland CBD and covers the Sky Tower, Devonport ferry, Maungawhau / Mount Eden, Cornwall Park and Piha. For the wider stopover shape, keep the Auckland region page beside your North Island in 10 days or Bay of Islands round-trip plan.

Start central, but do not park like a car

The Sky Tower is 0-2 km from most Auckland CBD hotels and about 5-15 minutes by road, depending on where you start. The practical move is to see it before you pick up the motorhome, or leave the vehicle at your holiday park and come in by bus, train, ferry, or taxi.

Central car parks such as Downtown Car Park and Victoria Street Car Park have height limits and tight ramps. They are built for cars, not high-roof campervans. Kerbside parks around Federal Street, Hobson Street and Wynyard Quarter are time-limited and often too short for anything over 6 metres.

Devonport is the better city add-on. Walk to Downtown Ferry Terminal, 1 km from the Sky Tower and about 10-15 minutes on foot. The passenger ferry to Devonport takes about 12 minutes. Driving there is 15 km via SH1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, usually 25-45 minutes, but the village streets and waterfront parking near Windsor Reserve are not a relaxing fit for a large motorhome.

Two green stops that suit a first driving day

Maungawhau / Mount Eden is 4 km south of the CBD and usually 15-25 minutes by road. You cannot drive to the summit. Park near Mount Eden Village or Puhi Huia Road if you can find a legal space, then allow 30-45 minutes for the walk up and back. The caveat is simple: go early, and avoid trying this in a 6-metre-plus vehicle during the school run or Saturday brunch traffic.

Cornwall Park is the easier motorhome stop. It is 8 km from the CBD and about 20-35 minutes via Manukau Road or Green Lane West. There are larger open-air parking areas inside the park, better turning room, toilets, picnic space and a good walk up Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill. No overnight camping is allowed in the park, but for a first afternoon in Auckland it is one of the calmer places to check cupboards, make lunch and reset after pickup.

Piha is a proper beach day, not a spare hour

Piha Beach is 40 km west of Auckland CBD. Allow 60-75 minutes each way in a motorhome via SH16, West Coast Road and Piha Road, longer on a hot January weekend. The last section is steep, narrow and winding. It is legal for normal rental motorhomes, but it is not where I would send a tired first-time left-side driver straight after an overnight flight.

There is day parking near Piha Beach and Lion Rock, but it fills early in summer and the spaces are not generous. Fill fuel before you go, commonly around New Lynn or Titirangi, because Piha is not a place to arrive low on diesel. Swimming conditions can be serious. Use the patrolled area when lifeguards are present and treat black-sand heat as a real thing for children and bare feet.

If Piha matters to your route, read the Auckland to Piha drive guide before you commit. It is a better fit after one night in Auckland than on the same afternoon you collect the vehicle.

A sensible order for one Auckland day

For most visitors, the clean order is: Sky Tower on foot, Devonport by ferry, collect the motorhome, then Cornwall Park. Add Maungawhau / Mount Eden only if you have a compact vehicle and daylight. Put Piha on the next morning, or skip it if you are heading north on the Bay of Islands round-trip or south on the Auckland to Rotorua drive.

A 2-berth or compact 4-berth is the easiest Auckland fit. A 6-metre-plus motorhome is fine on main roads such as SH1, SH16 and SH20, but it is clumsy around inner suburbs, ferry-terminal streets and beach car parks. January is the tightest month for traffic and parking. March is calmer and still warm enough for the coast.

Things To Do in Auckland — FAQ

Can I drive a motorhome into Auckland CBD for the Sky Tower?
You can drive into the CBD, but parking is the problem. Many central car parks have height limits, tight ramps and short bays. For the Sky Tower, it is usually better to visit before pickup, leave the motorhome at your Auckland base, or park farther out and use public transport. Do not assume a 6-metre vehicle will fit a standard city bay.
Is Devonport worth doing if we have a motorhome?
Yes, but go as foot passengers from Downtown Ferry Terminal. The ferry takes about 12 minutes and gives you the harbour view without dealing with Devonport's narrow village streets. Driving from Auckland CBD to Devonport is about 15 km and 25-45 minutes via SH1, but parking near the waterfront can be tight, especially in summer and on weekends.
Should Piha be on our first day after collecting the campervan?
Usually no. Piha is only 40 km from Auckland CBD, but the drive takes 60-75 minutes and Piha Road is winding, narrow and steep in places. It is much better on day two, after sleep and a first easy drive. If you have just landed from Europe or North America, choose Cornwall Park or a short supermarket run instead.
