North South Holiday Park is in Christchurch, not north of Auckland. It sits near Harewood and Christchurch Airport, so it works best as a first or last motorhome night when you want power, laundry, tanks sorted, and a short run to the depot the next morning.

It is an independent-style park rather than a Top 10, with powered and unpowered sites, a dump station, shared kitchens, laundry, lounge space, Wi-Fi that is useful but not something I would rely on for work calls, and a seasonal outdoor pool.

Get the Christchurch regional plan that pairs North South Holiday Park with the nearest practical DOC fallbacks, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.

Where it is, and who it suits

The park is about 5 km from Christchurch Airport, usually 7-12 minutes by motorhome outside peak traffic. Christchurch city centre is about 11 km away, more like 15-25 minutes depending on the time of day. It is not a pleasant CBD walking base.

This suits travellers starting or finishing a South Island in 14 days route, or anyone heading from Christchurch to Lake Tekapo after a first-night reset. If your wider research is on the Auckland region or a North Island in 10 days route, this is the wrong island. The name catches people out.

Powered sites, length, and site choice

Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$55-75 in peak summer, and noticeably lower in winter or quiet shoulder weeks. Rates move with demand, school holidays, and public holidays, so treat that as a planning band rather than a fixed tariff.

Normal 6 m to 7 m motorhomes are straightforward here. If you are in a longer 7.5 m-plus vehicle, tell reception before arrival. The issue is not the highway approach, it is turning room, tree cover, and where they can sensibly place you.

Unpowered sites make sense only if your battery is healthy and you are not running heating, device charging, and fridge load hard. For first night after an international flight, I would usually pay for power.

What you get on site

Expect the practical things: communal kitchens, shared lounge areas, coin or card laundry, toilets and showers, a dump station for guests, fresh-water fill, playground space, and a seasonal outdoor pool. The pool is not the reason to stay in May; weather and maintenance matter, so ask directly if that is important for children.

Wi-Fi is fine for messages, maps, and checking the next day. Do not plan a large upload from your site. For food, stock up before arriving if you have just collected the vehicle. Supermarkets and fuel are around Bishopdale, Northlands, and the airport/Russley Road side of town, generally 5-7 km away.

What's nearby for one or two nights

The International Antarctic Centre is about 5 km away, usually 7-10 minutes by road. Walking is around an hour on busy suburban roads, so I would not treat it as walkable with children or luggage. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve is about 5 km away. The Groynes is closer, roughly 3 km, and better for a leg-stretch after a long flight.

There is no proper DOC vehicle campsite within 30 km that works as a like-for-like backup. Godley Head Campsite is the nearest DOC-style option I would name, but it is roughly 35-40 km and 45-60 minutes away by road. For the detail, read Holiday parks vs DOC campsites and Dump stations and water fills before you rely on a fallback.

Common gotchas first-timers don't expect

Christchurch traffic is mild by overseas-city standards, but the first day still matters. New Zealand drives on the left, airport roads have roundabouts, and a wide motorhome feels larger after a long-haul flight. Keep the first day short.

Dog rules are by arrangement rather than automatic. Confirm before you arrive, especially in December and January, and expect tighter rules around shared facilities. Self-containment certification does not let you camp anywhere in Christchurch, so check Freedom camping in NZ if you plan to mix paid parks with free nights.

North South Holiday Park — motorhome stay guide FAQ

Do I need to book in January?
Yes, if you specifically want this park. January is peak summer, school holidays, and a common campervan pickup and return period in Christchurch. I would check availability several weeks ahead for a normal powered site, and earlier if you have a long vehicle, a dog, or need two sites together. February and March are usually easier, but weekends can still fill.
Are powered sites really worth it here?
For a first or last night, usually yes. Power lets you charge devices, run the fridge properly, use heating or cooling more comfortably, and avoid starting the trip with battery anxiety. If you are experienced, arriving early, and only staying one mild night, unpowered can work. After an international flight, powered is the calmer choice.
Can I dump tanks here without staying?
Do not assume that. The park has a dump station for guests, but day-use access can change and may depend on reception approval. If you are not staying, use a public dump point shown in a current dump-station app or council listing. Empty grey and black water only at proper dump stations, never into stormwater drains.
