Waihi Beach Top 10 is a beachside holiday park for travellers who want the easy version of a Bay of Plenty stop: powered sites, showers, laundry, a pool, and a proper dump station before heading back toward SH2.

It suits families and first-time motorhome travellers more than people chasing a quiet DOC night. The beach is the main reason to stay, and the January booking pressure is real.

Get the regional plan that pairs Waihi Beach Top 10 with Dickey Flat Campsite and Wentworth Valley Campground as DOC backups, or send your dates if you'd like a planner to sense-check the booking window for your week.

Where it is, and who it suits

Waihi Beach Top 10 sits at Waihi Beach, about 12 km and 15 minutes from Waihi town on the Bay of Plenty side of the Coromandel Peninsula loop. From Auckland, allow 160 km and 2.5 to 3 hours via SH1 and SH2, longer on a Friday afternoon.

The sand is effectively at the gate, so call it 100 to 200 m and a 2 minute walk. Waihi Beach village is about 1 km away, usually 12 to 15 minutes on foot for cafes, takeaway food, and small grocery top-ups. The nearest bigger fuel options are in Waihi, about 12 km away, although local fuel availability at the beach can change.

What you get for the price

This is a Top 10 park, so expect a fuller facility set than a basic camp. Powered sites for two adults are typically around NZ$70-105 in peak summer, with winter and midweek stays noticeably lower. School holidays, Christmas, and long weekends move the top of that band quickly.

On site you should have a communal kitchen, barbecue areas, lounge or TV space, laundry, Wi-Fi that is fine for messages but not something I would rely on for big work calls, plus a dump station for guests. The pool and hot-water facilities are a big part of the value here, especially after beach days with kids.

Powered vs unpowered sites

Take a powered site if you are running a fridge, charging devices, using an electric heater in the shoulder season, or staying more than one night. Unpowered can work for a certified self-contained vehicle in settled weather, but this is not the place I would save a few dollars if the forecast is wet.

Tell the park your vehicle length when you enquire, especially over 7 m or if you have bikes, a tow bar, or a wide awning. Some beach parks have tight internal turns and neighbouring cars parked close to site edges.

What's nearby for one or two nights

For one night, arrive early enough to swim, walk the beach, and reset the van. For two nights, add Orokawa Bay Walk from the northern end of Waihi Beach, or drive to Karangahake Gorge, about 26 km and 30 minutes away, for the Windows Walk and river tracks.

If you are comparing holiday parks vs DOC campsites, Dickey Flat Campsite near the gorge is the closest DOC-style backup, roughly 29 km by road. Wentworth Valley Campground near Whangamatā is farther, around 50 km and 55 minutes, but it can make sense on a wider Coromandel Peninsula loop.

Common gotchas first-timers don't expect

January is not casual here. Book well ahead for New Year, Auckland Anniversary weekend, and Waitangi week. If your North Island in 10 days route puts you here in February or March, you still want a plan, but the pressure usually eases outside school holidays.

Do not assume dogs are fine because it is a beach town. Many Top 10 parks either restrict dogs, exclude them in peak periods, or require approval before arrival. Check directly before shaping a pet itinerary. Also remember New Zealand drives on the left, and beach-town streets can be narrow once cars and boat trailers fill the kerb.

Waihi Beach Top10 Holiday Park — motorhome stay guide FAQ

Do I need to book Waihi Beach Top 10 in January?
Yes. January is the peak month for Waihi Beach, especially from New Year through the end of the school holidays. For powered motorhome sites, I would not leave it until the week before. If you need a specific site size, are travelling with children, or want two vans together, start looking several months ahead. February is easier, but summer weekends can still tighten.
Are powered sites really worth it here?
For most international travellers, yes. A powered site keeps the fridge steady, charges cameras and phones, and gives you more margin if the weather turns. It also makes sense if you are doing laundry or cooking properly after a beach day. Unpowered is fine for one settled night in a self-contained motorhome, but the saving is usually small compared with the comfort gained.
Can I dump tanks here without staying?
Do not assume it. The dump station is primarily for park guests, and access rules can change with management, season, and how busy the park is. If you are not staying, phone first or use the Dump stations and water fills guide to find a public option near Waihi or along SH2. Never empty grey water into roadside drains or beach car parks.
