Driving a NZ motorhome in February
February is one of the best months to drive NZ by motorhome. Stable weather, warm sea temperatures, NZ school year back, prices below January and holiday parks easier to book.
February is statistically the warmest month of the year in most of NZ — daytime highs of 19-26°C across the South Island east coast, 23-28°C across the North Island, and consistently dry inland Otago and Canterbury. The school year restarts on the first Monday of February, which empties holiday parks of domestic families almost overnight, and rental rates step down from January's peak by roughly 10-20% from the second week onwards. The combination of stable weather and dropping demand is why many returning visitors choose February over January.
Weather across the islands
South Island: the driest and stablest month of the year on the east coast and inland. Wanaka, Queenstown, Tekapo and Aoraki see long settled spells. West Coast still gets rain but breaks are longer. North Island: hot and humid above Hamilton, drier south of Lake Taupō. Coromandel and Bay of Islands sea temperatures still around 19-22°C.
What you pay vs. January
Vehicle rental in the first week of February is still close to January peak; from the second week it eases by 10-15%, and the last week is closer to shoulder rates. Holiday parks drop their peak surcharges around Waitangi Day (6 February). Cook Strait ferries are easier to book — 2-3 months ahead is usually enough.
Waitangi Day weekend caveat
Waitangi Day (6 February) is a public holiday — domestic Kiwis take the surrounding weekend off, so Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Hokianga and the Far North fill up for that one weekend. Plan to be elsewhere or book early.
