Driving a NZ motorhome in January
January is peak NZ summer — longest daylight, warmest sea, most expensive motorhome rates and busiest holiday parks. Book the vehicle and the Cook Strait ferry 5-8 months ahead.
January is the most demanded month for NZ motorhome travel and the costliest. Daylight runs from about 5:45am to 9:00pm in mid-January, daytime temperatures sit at 18-25°C on the South Island east coast and 22-28°C across the North Island, and sea temperatures hit their annual peak around Northland and the Coromandel. The trade-off is price and crowding: motorhome daily rates are 25-35% above shoulder season, Cook Strait ferries sell out 3-4 months ahead, and the marquee holiday parks (Queenstown Top 10, Franz Josef, Tekapo, Rotorua) need to be booked weeks in advance.
Weather and what to pack
South Island east coast and Otago: stable, dry, hot. West Coast: 200-300 mm of January rain isn't unusual — pack a real rain jacket. Fiordland (Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound): wet at any time including January. Pack layers — overnight in Tekapo and Aoraki can still drop to 8°C.
What to book in advance
Motorhome 5-8 months out. Cook Strait ferry at the same time. Holiday parks for Queenstown, Tekapo, Franz Josef, Rotorua, Bay of Islands — 2-4 weeks out for the dates you need. Milford Sound day cruise — 1-2 weeks out for a specific time slot.
Where to go to avoid the worst of the crowds
The Catlins, the East Cape, the Far North above Kerikeri, and Stewart Island all stay relatively quiet even in January because they're an extra travel day off the main loop. If your dates are fixed in January and the standard route looks too booked-out, those four side-trips are how you get back to scenery without queues.
