Mount Cook in April: motorhome guide
Autumn — Wanaka/Arrowtown gold colours, ferry pressure off, cooler nights
Mount Cook in April is autumn in the Mackenzie Country. The big summer rush has eased, the air is sharper, and the road in from Lake Pukaki still gives you one of the cleanest alpine arrivals in New Zealand.
It is not a warm month. Expect cool nights, changeable mountain weather, and a need to plan campsites rather than assume every DOC space will suit your vehicle and heating needs.

What Mount Cook is like in April
April is one of the better shoulder-season months for Aoraki/Mount Cook if you want alpine scenery without January pressure. The usual average range is about 12°C by day and 3°C overnight around Mount Cook Village, colder if a southerly comes through or you are camped in an exposed valley.
The landscape is dry-gold rather than green. Nearby Wanaka and Arrowtown carry stronger autumn colour, so Mount Cook works well as the high-country section of a Christchurch to Queenstown route or a Wanaka to Mount Cook drive.
Rain and cloud are still part of the deal. This is alpine country, so showers can build quickly and the mountain may disappear for a day. April is not the wettest stretch of the year, but you should allow one spare night if Aoraki is the reason you are coming.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Early April still has useful daylight. Around the start of the month, first light is roughly 7:20 a.m. and last light is around 7:50 p.m., helped by daylight saving. After the clock change in early April, evenings feel shorter. By late April, first light is closer to 7:00 a.m. and last light is around 6:10 p.m.
That matters in a motorhome. Christchurch to Mount Cook via SH1, SH79 and SH8 is about 330 km and 4.5 to 5 hours of real driving before photo stops. Queenstown to Mount Cook via SH6, SH8 and SH80 is about 265 km and 3.75 to 4.5 hours. Do not leave either one for late afternoon.
Pack for frost. A powered site is worth considering if your rental heating depends on mains power. The broader April when-to-go page and the Best time of year for a NZ campervan trip guide are useful companions for comparing this with March, May, and early winter.
Crowds and pricing in April
April sits in shoulder season, so daily motorhome rates are usually lower than peak summer, but not as soft as deep winter. The first half can still carry Easter and NZ school-holiday pressure. New Zealand school holidays usually fall in mid-April, and holiday parks fill faster around that window even when the roads feel calm.
Ferry pressure is easier than in January and February. If your trip includes the Cook Strait ferry, the Interislander or Bluebridge crossing between Wellington and Picton takes about 3 hours 20 minutes on the water, or around 3.5 hours with loading. In April, book weeks ahead rather than months ahead unless Easter sits inside your dates.
Vehicle choice is less about price and more about warmth. A small 2-berth is easier on SH80 and in village parking. A 6-berth gives space for families, but it is slower on SH8, thirstier, and more awkward in tight holiday-park lanes.
What to do specifically in April
The Hooker Valley Track is the main April target. It starts near White Horse Hill and is about 10 km return, usually 3 to 4 hours depending on wind and photo stops. Go early, carry a warm layer, and turn back if the weather closes in.
White Horse Hill Campground is the classic DOC base for walkers, but it is exposed and basic. It suits self-contained travellers who understand cold nights. For power, showers, and a warmer reset, look at the holiday park options around Twizel or Lake Tekapo before or after your Mount Cook night.
Skip over-ambitious late-day detours. The Tasman Glacier View Track is a good short option, but trying to add it after a long drive from Christchurch is how first-timers end up cooking dinner in the dark. Lake Pukaki viewpoints on SH80 are better done slowly, with daylight in hand.
Routes that make sense from Mount Cook in April
Mount Cook fits neatly into South Island in 10 days if you keep the route simple: Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown. South Island in 14 days gives you more weather margin and is the better choice if you also want the West Coast or Milford Sound.
The Christchurch to Queenstown route is the cleanest April plan. It avoids unnecessary backtracking and keeps the alpine driving mostly on SH8 and SH80. From Mount Cook Village to Wanaka is about 210 km and 3 to 3.5 hours via Twizel, Omarama and the Lindis Pass, which tops out at 965 m.
Snow chains are not usually required on SH80 in April, but a cold snap can bring ice, especially early morning. Check Waka Kotahi road updates before driving, and read the snow chains in NZ guide if your route continues over higher passes later in the season.
