West Coast in April motorhome guide
Autumn — Wanaka/Arrowtown gold colours, ferry pressure off, cooler nights
West Coast in April suits travellers who can handle rain and want quieter roads than summer. The rainforest is properly green, the glaciers are still accessible, and the sea-level drives around Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier stay straightforward for most motorhomes.

What West Coast is like in April
April is autumn shoulder season on the West Coast. Expect average highs around 16°C and lows around 8°C near Hokitika and the glacier towns. Nights feel cooler in a campervan than the number suggests, because damp air gets into everything. Use the heater, carry a proper rain jacket, and plan one laundry stop.
The good part is space. SH6 has fewer rental vehicles than January and February, and viewpoints such as Lake Matheson and the Hokitika Gorge are easier to enjoy without shuffling for a car park. The West Coast region guide is worth reading beside the broader April in New Zealand month page, because this coast has its own weather pattern.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Rain is normal here. April is not the wettest month, but alpine showers are expected and fronts can sit against the Southern Alps for a day or two. Build a spare half-day into glacier plans. If your heli-hike cancels, the rainforest walks, Ōkārito lagoon, Hokitika galleries and Punakaiki still work in drizzle.
Daylight changes quickly. Early April has first light around 7:15 a.m. and last light near 7:45 p.m. before daylight saving ends. By late April, first light is closer to 7:05 a.m. and last light is around 6:20 p.m. That matters on SH6, where you do not want your first left-side motorhome drive happening in wet twilight.
Crowds and pricing in April
Pricing is shoulder-season rather than summer peak. Motorhome daily rates usually sit below January and February, but not at deep winter levels. The NZ school holidays often fall in mid-April, and that is the exception. Holiday parks fill faster for family cabins, powered sites, and the better sheltered spots.
For normal April weeks, book key West Coast nights 2 to 4 weeks ahead if your route is flexible. For the school-holiday window, allow 4 to 6 weeks for Hokitika Holiday Park, Franz Josef TOP 10 Holiday Park, or Fox Glacier TOP 10 Holiday Park. Cook Strait ferry pressure is lighter than summer, but if you are using Interislander or Bluebridge between Wellington and Picton, allow at least 2 to 3 weeks. The crossing is 3 hours 20 minutes, or about 3.5 hours with loading.
What to expect at the holiday parks and DOC sites in April
Powered sites are useful in April. They let you run heat, dry wet gear, and reset batteries after short driving days. A compact 2-berth or medium 4-berth is a better fit than a large 6-berth if you are using glacier-town parks and older town streets. Larger vehicles are fine on SH6, but they are less fun in tight rain-soaked car parks.
DOC options such as Lake Mahinapua Campsite near Hokitika and Gillespies Beach Campsite near Fox Glacier can be excellent in settled weather. Check access after heavy rain. Freedom camping rules are council-specific, and you need certified self-containment where freedom camping is allowed. Read Freedom camping in NZ before assuming a beach pull-off is legal.
Routes that make sense from West Coast in April
The cleanest April plan is South Island in 14 days, with Christchurch, Arthur's Pass, Greymouth, Franz Josef, Wanaka and Queenstown in that order. Greymouth to Franz Josef is about 175 km and 2.5 to 3 hours of real driving without long stops. Franz Josef to Fox Glacier is only 24 km and about 30 minutes, but do not rush it if visibility is good.
For a shorter loop, South Island in 10 days can still include the Coast, but skip one glacier town and give the saved night to Wanaka or Mount Cook / Aoraki. Fox Glacier to Wanaka via Haast Pass is about 260 km and 4 to 5 hours. Haast Pass is 564 m, so snow is uncommon in April, but rain, slips and treefall are more realistic risks. Arthur's Pass on SH73 reaches 920 m and can get early cold snaps late in the month. Snow chains are not normally needed for standard April touring, but check the Snow chains in NZ guide if you are crossing after a southerly front.
