NZ motorhome trip in autumn — March through May
Autumn runs March through May. Stable weather, autumn colour peaking in April, shoulder-season pricing dropping to winter low by May. Many repeat NZ travellers' first choice.
Autumn — meteorologically March, April, May — is the season most repeat NZ visitors recommend. Daytime temperatures fall gradually from 18-25°C in early March to 10-15°C by late May, daylight contracts from about 13 hours to 10 hours, and weather across the country is statistically at its most stable. Motorhome rates step down from peak through the season, hitting their annual low (40-50% below January) by late May. The headline attractions — Milford, Aoraki, the West Coast glaciers, the Bay of Islands — are all open and quiet.
What changes across the season
March is the last warm-water month for North Island beach stops. Mid-to-late April is the autumn-colour peak in Central Otago and the Mackenzie. May brings the first alpine snow and the start of the ski season's run-up. Cook Strait ferries are easy to book all season. Holiday parks have spare capacity outside Easter and the late-September school holidays.
What to pack for autumn
Layers. Daytime can be t-shirt weather in March on the east coast and full jacket weather in May at Aoraki. Overnight always cooler than coastal summer. A real rain jacket for the West Coast and Fiordland. Warm sleeping kit for any route into the mountains in late April or May.
The two caveats
Easter weekend (varies by year, usually March or April) is peak domestic travel — holiday parks at Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Tekapo and Wanaka book up 6-8 weeks ahead. NZ school holidays in mid-to-late April also push demand at headline stops. Outside those two windows, autumn is the most under-booked premium scenery in NZ.
