Mount Cook in December is high summer arriving in the Mackenzie Country, but it is still alpine country. Expect long daylight, cold mornings, fast weather changes, and the first serious holiday-park pressure from the week before Christmas.

The sweet spot is usually the first half of the month. From Boxing Day, White Horse Hill, Glentanner and the Lake Tekapo area can feel tight for motorhomes, especially if you need a powered site.

What Mount Cook is like in December

December gives Mount Cook / Aoraki its long walking days. Average temperatures sit around 16°C by day and 6°C overnight at the village, so a T-shirt afternoon and a puffer-jacket evening can happen on the same day.

Rain is not unusual. This is alpine country, so showers build quickly off the Main Divide even when Lake Pukaki looks clear. The driest-feeling days often come with a nor'wester, which can make exposed tracks unpleasant.

First light is around 5:10 a.m. and last light around 9:50 p.m. That is enough time for the Hooker Valley Track after a sensible drive in, but do not treat the daylight as permission to arrive tired after dark.

Road access, snow and driving reality

SH80 from Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook Village is usually straightforward in December. Snow chains are not normally needed on SH80 then, but cold snaps can still dust higher ground. If your route crosses the Lindis Pass on SH8 between Queenstown or Wanaka and the Mackenzie Basin, remember it reaches 965 m.

Christchurch to Mount Cook via SH1, SH79, SH8 and SH80 is about 330 km and 4.5 to 5.5 hours in a motorhome with stops. Queenstown to Mount Cook via SH6 and SH8 is about 265 km and 3.75 to 4.5 hours. New Zealand drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months; bring an IDP if yours is not in English.

If you are nervous about alpine weather, read Snow chains in NZ before you build a December plan.

Crowds and pricing in December

Early December is busy but still workable. By the third school week, New Zealand schools begin finishing. From about 26 December to early January, holiday parks and DOC sites fill much faster.

Motorhome pricing moves from shoulder-season feel into peak summer pricing during the month. Larger vehicles can be harder to place at small alpine sites, and a 6-berth is clumsy in tight car parks around the village. A compact 2-berth or 4-berth is easier on SH80, at White Horse Hill, and around the Tasman Valley road.

For Christmas to New Year, plan sites 3 to 4 months ahead. For 1 to 20 December, 6 to 8 weeks is more realistic if you are flexible. If your trip uses the Cook Strait ferry with a campervan, Picton-Wellington sailings take about 3 hours 20 minutes, closer to 3.5 hours with loading, and peak-season vehicle space should be sorted about 4 months out.

What to do specifically in December

The Hooker Valley Track is the main December walk: 10 km return, usually 3 to 4 hours for visitors who stop for photos. Start early if the forecast mentions strong wind. Kea Point is shorter at about 1 hour return from White Horse Hill. Tasman Glacier View Track is a good option when cloud sits low around Aoraki.

White Horse Hill DOC campsite is the closest base, with no powered sites and a strong mountain-hut feel. Glentanner Park Centre, 18 km back down SH80, is better if you need power, showers and more structure. Lake Tekapo and Twizel are fallback bases, but they add driving.

Good route fits include Christchurch to Queenstown, South Island in 10 days, and Queenstown to Mount Cook. Also read the broader December when-to-go page and the Mount Cook / Aoraki region guide before choosing between one night and two.
