Rotorua in December motorhome guide
Pre-Christmas — school finishes 3rd week, holiday-park crush from 26 Dec
Rotorua in December works well in a motorhome if you understand the calendar. The first half is warm and fairly manageable. From the third school week onward, New Zealand families start moving, and from 26 December the holiday-park pressure becomes real.
This page sits alongside the Rotorua region page, the December campervan guide, and the Best time of year for a NZ campervan trip guide for travellers choosing between North Island summer routes.

What Rotorua is like in December
December is early summer in Rotorua. The lakes are usable, the redwood forest is cool enough in the morning, and geothermal sites are open as normal. Average temperatures sit around 22°C by day and 12°C overnight, so most motorhomes are comfortable without heating.
The catch is timing. Before about 20 December, you are still ahead of the full local rush. After schools finish in the third week, roads to Lake Tarawera, Blue Lake and the city holiday parks get busier each day. From Boxing Day, treat Rotorua like a peak-summer resort town.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Rotorua is not at alpine altitude, so December does not bring snow-chain thinking. SH5 from Auckland or Taupō, SH30 around the lakes, SH33 from Tauranga, and SH1 south toward Taupō are normally open. Summer roadworks and holiday traffic are much more likely than weather closures.
Rain is still part of the Rotorua story. December is not the wettest month, but humid afternoon showers and short downpours are common, especially around the lakes and forest. Keep outdoor plans flexible rather than cancelling whole days.
Daylight is generous. Around the solstice, first light is roughly 5:15 a.m. and last light close to 9:00 p.m. That helps on arrival days, but do not plan late rural driving if you are new to left-side roads.
Crowds and pricing in December
Early December sits between shoulder and summer pricing. Daily rental rates are already lifting, but the real peak usually lands once school holidays and Christmas travel overlap. From 26 December to early January, vehicle choice narrows and powered sites fill fast.
For a Christmas or New Year stay, look 4 to 6 months ahead for the motorhome and key parks. For the first two weeks of December, 2 to 3 months can still work, but families and larger 4-berths need more margin. A compact 2-berth or small 4-berth is easier in Rotorua car parks than a long 6-berth, especially around lake reserves.
NZ school holidays run from mid-December to late January. That is the main pressure point, not international visitors alone.
What to do specifically in December
December is strong for lake mornings, forest walks, geothermal parks and short drives. Do the Redwoods early, then use the hot part of the day for Te Puia, Wai-O-Tapu, Hell's Gate, or a lake swim. Hobbiton is near Matamata, about 70 km from Rotorua, usually 1 hour 10 minutes each way in a motorhome.
Skip trying to do every attraction in one day. Rotorua rewards slower pacing. Also skip casual freedom camping unless you have checked the current local rules and your vehicle has the correct self-containment certification. The Freedom camping in NZ guide and Self-contained certification explained are worth reading before you rely on free overnight stops.
Routes that make sense from Rotorua in December
The Rotorua + Tongariro loop is the most natural December pairing. Rotorua to Taupō is 80 km, about 1 hour 15 minutes on SH5, then Taupō to Tongariro National Park is another 100 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Alpine showers can still hit Tongariro, but snow closures are unlikely in December.
The Auckland to Rotorua drive is 230 km and usually 3 to 3.5 hours by motorhome, longer if you add Hobbiton. The Rotorua to Napier drive is 220 km, about 3.5 to 4 hours via SH5, with winding forest sections where tired drivers make mistakes. NZ drives on the left. Foreign licences in English are valid for up to 12 months; if your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or approved translation.
If Rotorua is part of a North to South in 21 days route, book the Cook Strait ferry early for late December. Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes between Wellington and Picton, or about 3.5 hours once loading is included.
What to expect at the holiday parks and DOC sites in December
Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park and Blue Lake Top 10 Holiday Park are useful bases in December because they keep you close to town or the lake without hunting for legal overnight parking. Hot Water Beach Campsite at Lake Tarawera is a stronger nature stop, but it needs more planning and is not a casual late-arrival option.
Powered sites are the bottleneck after Christmas. If you need laundry, showers, power and a dump station before moving on to Taupō or Tongariro, plan that stop rather than assuming a same-day site will appear.
