Driving a NZ motorhome in December
December is split — the first two weeks are still shoulder-priced and quiet, the last two weeks are peak summer with the year's highest rental rates and busiest holiday parks.
December is the year's longest-daylight month (15+ hours at the December solstice) and the start of NZ peak summer. The first 10-12 days of December are still shoulder season — rates only 5-15% above November, holiday parks have availability, ferries bookable 3-4 weeks out. From around 15 December the country pivots: domestic holidays start, international families arrive, holiday parks book out, motorhome rates step up sharply, and Cook Strait ferries are at peak demand.
Early December — best of summer without peak prices
If your travel dates land in the first 10 days of December, you get summer-length daylight, warm weather, all routes open, and rates close to November shoulder. It's one of the most under-recommended windows for international NZ motorhome travel.
Mid-to-late December — peak conditions and peak prices
From around 18 December, the country is at full summer demand. Christmas Eve through 2 January is the single busiest week of the year — holiday parks at headline stops fully book out 3-4 months ahead, ferries 4-6 months ahead, and motorhome rates are at the absolute annual peak. Plan accordingly or shift dates.
What to pack
Hot-weather clothing for the North Island, layered clothing for the South Island where overnight in Tekapo or Aoraki can still drop to 6-8°C. Sun protection — NZ UV is genuinely strong at this latitude in summer. Insect repellent for the West Coast sandflies.
