West Coast in July: motorhome guide
Winter — ski season peak in Queenstown/Wanaka, snow on Crown Range, holiday parks quiet
West Coast in July is proper winter motorhome travel. Greymouth, Hokitika, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are quiet, green and wet, with snow sitting above the bush line rather than on most coastal roads.
The main question is not crowds. It is timing your driving around rain bands, short daylight, and the passes out to Christchurch, Wanaka or Queenstown.

What the West Coast is like in July
July is low season on the West Coast, except where it connects to ski traffic in Wanaka and Queenstown. Expect average temperatures around 12°C by day and 5°C overnight near Hokitika and Greymouth, a little colder inland at Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.
This is not a dry-winter region. The West Coast gets heavy frontal rain in any month, and July often brings long wet spells with clear gaps between them. Build your days so a glacier valley walk can move by 24 hours if the cloud drops.
First light is around 7:30 a.m. and last light around 5:50 p.m. in mid-July. That gives you a short safe-driving window, especially on SH6 through forest, one-lane bridges and shaded corners.
Roads, passes and winter driving checks
SH6 along the coast is usually open in July, but slips, surface flooding and treefall can follow heavy rain. The bigger winter calls are the exits. SH73 over Arthur's Pass is 920 m and can have snow, ice or chain restrictions. SH6 over Haast Pass is lower at 564 m, but still closes at times for snow, rockfall or avalanche control.
If you are heading from Fox Glacier to Wanaka or Queenstown, allow 5.5 to 6.5 hours to Wanaka for 260 km in winter conditions. Do not treat it as a casual afternoon drive. The Crown Range Road to Queenstown reaches 1,121 m; in a larger 6-berth, the longer SH6 route via Cromwell is often calmer in bad weather.
NZ drives on the left. A foreign licence in English is valid for 12 months; if it is not in English, carry an IDP or approved translation. Read the Snow chains in NZ guide before you assume chains are supplied or allowed on your vehicle.
Crowds and pricing in July
Motorhome daily rates on the West Coast sit toward winter levels, usually well below summer peak. The exception is vehicle availability around Christchurch and Queenstown because July is ski season. A warm van with reliable heating matters more than getting the largest layout for the lowest daily rate.
NZ school holidays usually cover the first half of July. Holiday parks still feel quiet compared with January, but family cabins and powered sites can fill faster on Friday and Saturday nights. Hokitika Holiday Park, Greymouth Seaside Top 10 and Franz Josef Top 10 are worth checking ahead during that window.
If you cross Cook Strait, the Interislander or Bluebridge trip between Wellington and Picton takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, or 3.5 hours with loading. In July, book earlier for school-holiday weeks, especially with a motorhome over 6 m. The Cook Strait ferry with a campervan guide is the one to read if your South Island in 14 days route starts in Picton.
What to do specifically in July
July suits short walks, hot drinks, indoor backup plans and weather windows rather than long alpine objectives. Hokitika Gorge, the Hokitika town waterfront, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Lake Matheson and the Franz Josef Glacier valley track all work well between fronts. The ice and cloud can make the glacier country feel sharper than it does in summer.
Skip exposed beach camping in a strong westerly. Also be cautious with unsealed side roads after rain, including some coastal DOC access roads. DOC Lake Mahinapua is useful south of Hokitika, while Otto/MacDonalds near Franz Josef is a simple DOC option when conditions are settled. Check notices before relying on any basic site in winter.
Freedom camping rules still apply in July. You need the right self-containment certification, and local restrictions vary by district. Read Freedom camping in NZ before treating an empty car park as an overnight stop.
Routes that make sense from the West Coast in July
The cleanest winter itineraries keep driving days short. Greymouth to Franz Josef is about 175 km and 2.5 to 3 hours on SH6. Franz Josef to Fox Glacier is only 25 km and about 30 minutes, which is ideal when the weather is mixed. Hokitika to Greymouth is 40 km and about 35 to 45 minutes.
For a bigger loop, South Island in 14 days gives you time to wait out rain and still reach Mount Cook, Wanaka or Christchurch. South Island in 10 days can work, but it has less slack for pass closures. The broader July page and the West Coast region guide are better starting points if you are still deciding between glacier country, Queenstown ski time and the east coast.
