Bay of Islands in June motorhome guide
Early winter — snow on alpine passes, ski season starts late month, lowest demand on coast
Bay of Islands in June is early winter, but not South Island winter. You are looking at wet roads, green hills, quiet beaches, short daylight and mild coastal temperatures, not snow chains for Paihia or Russell.
It works well for travellers who want Northland without summer crowds. It works less well if your plan depends on long beach days every afternoon.

What Bay of Islands is like in June
June is low season on the Northland coast. Paihia, Russell, Kerikeri and Waitangi are open, but they feel local again. Cafes may run shorter hours midweek. Boat trips usually still operate, though wind and sea state matter more than the calendar.
For a motorhome, this is a practical month. Auckland to Bay of Islands is about 230 km and 4 to 4.5 hours in real driving via SH1, with a sensible stop at Whangārei or Kawakawa. SH10 links Kerikeri and the eastern side of the bay. None of these roads need snow chains in normal conditions.
The catch is rain. Northland roads are sealed and straightforward, but winter downpours can bring surface water, slips, and slower traffic on SH1 north of Wellsford. If this is your first week driving on the left in NZ, do not plan a late-night arrival into Paihia after a long-haul flight.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Bay of Islands in June averages about 16°C by day and 9°C overnight. That is mild by UK, Canadian or German winter standards, but it feels damp inside a camper if you do not ventilate. Use campground power every few nights for heating, laundry and drying towels.
June sits in Northland's wettest stretch. Expect showers, some heavy rain, and quick changes rather than all-day sunshine. The sea keeps frost away near Paihia and Russell, but inland mornings around Kerikeri can feel colder.
Daylight is short near the winter solstice. Around Paihia, first light is roughly 7:00 a.m. and last light is about 5:45 p.m. Plan walks, ferry hops and dump-station stops before late afternoon. Winter makes simple logistics slower.
Crowds and pricing in June
June is winter pricing for campervans and holiday parks in the Bay of Islands. Daily rental rates usually sit well below the summer peak, and there is more choice in vehicle size if you are looking 3 to 6 months ahead. A compact 2-berth is enough for most couples here. A 6-berth is cheaper per person, but less pleasant on narrow campground lanes and wet supermarket car parks.
NZ school holidays do not usually fall in June. They sit in early July, late September, mid-April and mid-December to late January. The exceptions are long weekends. King's Birthday is the first Monday in June, and Matariki can fall in late June depending on the year. For those weekends, book Russell Top 10 or Paihia Top 10 about 3 to 4 weeks ahead. For normal midweek June nights, 1 to 2 weeks is often enough.
What to do specifically in June
June suits short, flexible days. Visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the morning, take the passenger ferry to Russell if the weather is settled, and keep Kerikeri's Stone Store and Rainbow Falls for a wet day. The Russell car ferry from Ōpua also runs year-round, but load early if you are travelling with a larger motorhome.
Skip plans that require perfect beach weather. Swimming is for hardy people in June. Instead, build your Bay of Islands round-trip around two or three nights in Paihia or Russell, then add Kerikeri or Mangonui if the forecast is friendly.
Freedom camping in Northland is tightly controlled by local bylaws, and self-containment certification matters. Read Freedom camping Northland before assuming a beachfront lay-by is legal. The Best time of year for a NZ campervan trip guide is also useful if you are comparing June with May or September.
Routes that make sense from Bay of Islands in June
The simplest plan is the Auckland to Bay of Islands drive with 3 to 5 nights north of Auckland. That gives you time for Whangārei, Paihia, Russell and Kerikeri without driving in the dark. The Bay of Islands round-trip works well in June because you can adjust the order around rain.
If you have 10 days, link it into North Island in 10 days by adding Auckland, Rotorua and possibly Tongariro National Park. Just remember that Tongariro is a different winter story. Ice, snow and alpine weather can affect roads and walks there while Bay of Islands stays mild and wet.
For a longer North to South in 21 days route, June is quiet on the Cook Strait Interislander and Bluebridge ferries compared with summer, but motorhome deck space is still finite. Wellington to Picton takes about 3 hours 20 minutes on the water, closer to 3.5 hours with loading. Book earlier if your ferry day cannot move.
