West Coast in June motorhome travel guide
Early winter — snow on alpine passes, ski season starts late month, lowest demand on coast
West Coast in June is early winter at sea level, with snow sitting above the bush line and rain doing what West Coast rain does. The coast road on SH6 is usually workable, but the passes in and out need respect.
This is a quiet month for Hokitika, Greymouth, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. It can suit a motorhome trip if you keep driving days short, use powered sites, and do not treat mountain weather as a minor detail.

What West Coast is like in June
June is low season on the West Coast, not because it is empty of things to do, but because the weather is blunt. Around Hokitika and Greymouth, average daytime highs sit near 12°C and overnight lows around 5°C. Franz Josef and Fox Glacier feel cooler once cloud drops into the valleys.
Rain is part of the deal. This is not the driest stretch of the year, and alpine showers are expected. The upside is clear: waterfalls run hard, the glaciers look sharp after fresh snow, and you are not fighting summer coach traffic through every small town.
For a first South Island winter trip, the West Coast region works best with a 2-berth or compact 4-berth motorhome. A large 6-berth is warmer once parked, but less pleasant on wet, narrow pull-outs and winding SH6 sections.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Plan around short days. Near Greymouth in mid-June, first light is around 7:25 a.m. and last light around 5:35 p.m. That gives you less useful daylight than visitors expect, especially if rain slows the morning pack-up.
- Normal drive rhythm: leave after breakfast, aim to park by 3:30 p.m.
- Wet-day rhythm: cut one stop, use a powered holiday park, run the heater properly.
- Outdoor timing: do short walks early if the forecast gives you a clean window.
Good June stops include Hokitika Gorge, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Lake Matheson on a calm morning, and the glacier valley walks when conditions allow. Skip ambitious high-country walks if the forecast mentions snow, freezing rain, or rising rivers.
Roads, passes and winter access
SH6 along the coast is mostly low elevation, so snow on the road is uncommon. The issue is heavy rain, slips, surface water, and one-lane bridge patience. The more serious calls are the exits: SH73 over Arthur's Pass at 920 m, and SH6 over Haast Pass at 564 m.
Greymouth to Franz Josef is about 175 km and 2 hours 45 minutes in good conditions. Franz Josef to Fox Glacier is only 23 km and about 25 minutes. Fox Glacier to Wanaka over Haast Pass is 262 km, but allow 4.5 to 5 hours in June. Greymouth to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass is 240 km and usually 4 to 4.5 hours in dry weather.
Check the Snow chains in NZ guide before crossing a pass. NZ drives on the left. A foreign licence in English is valid for 12 months, and you need an IDP or approved translation if it is not in English.
Crowds and pricing in June
West Coast campervan demand is at winter levels in June, usually well below summer peak and below shoulder-season pressure. Daily rental rates tend to sit toward the lower end of the year, but one-way availability can still be awkward if you are trying to start in Christchurch and finish in Queenstown.
NZ school holidays usually begin in early July, so most of June avoids family-holiday pressure. The final week can start to tighten, especially if ski traffic is already building around Queenstown and Wanaka.
Holiday parks do not usually need summer-style lead times. For Hokitika Holiday Park or Greymouth Seaside Top 10, a few days ahead is often enough midweek. If your trip uses the Cook Strait ferry, allow more care: Interislander or Bluebridge takes about 3 hours 20 minutes Picton to Wellington, closer to 3.5 hours with loading, and winter sailings still deserve 2 to 4 weeks of planning space.
Routes that make sense from West Coast in June
The safest June route shape is flexible. South Island in 14 days gives the West Coast enough breathing room without forcing a pass crossing in bad weather. Greymouth to Franz Josef is a sensible short-drive day, and Fox Glacier to Wanaka is the one to watch closely because Haast Pass can change fast.
If you are linking the West Coast with Christchurch, keep the Greymouth to Christchurch drive over Arthur's Pass as a weather-dependent day, not a fixed promise. If the forecast is poor, wait in Greymouth or Hokitika rather than pushing a tired driver into snow or black ice.
For camping, use powered sites more than remote freedom spots. Lake Mahinapua DOC campsite and Gillespies Beach are good names to know, but June comfort often wins over romance.
