Rotorua in May for a motorhome trip
Late autumn — last quiet shoulder before winter, lowest pre-ski-season rates
Rotorua in May is late autumn: cooler mornings, steamier geothermal parks, quieter roads and generally kinder motorhome rates before the winter ski traffic starts. It is a good month if you want the North Island without January crowds.

What Rotorua is like in May
May suits travellers who want a slower North Island loop. Rotorua is not a beach stop in this month. It is geothermal valleys, forest tracks, hot pools, Māori cultural evenings and short drives to Taupō, Hobbiton near Matamata and Tongariro National Park.
The city sits inland, so it feels cooler than Auckland at night. A certified self-contained motorhome helps because freedom camping rules around Rotorua and the lakes are tight, and many legal spots are limited. Read Freedom camping in NZ before assuming a lakeside pull-in is allowed.
New Zealand drives on the left. If your licence is in English it is normally valid for up to 12 months. If it is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or approved translation.
Temperature, rain, daylight
Plan on average May temperatures around 16°C by day and 7°C overnight. A frosty start is possible inland, but snow in Rotorua itself is not a normal planning issue.
Rain is possible in any month here. May is not usually the wettest part of the year, but autumn showers and damp forest tracks are common. Pack a proper rain shell, not just a light city jacket.
Daylight is the main limiter. Early May gives first light around 6:25 a.m. and last light near 5:55 p.m. By late May it is closer to first light around 6:50 a.m. and last light around 5:35 p.m. Start the Redwoods, Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu or lakeside walks before lunch, especially if you are driving on afterwards.
Crowds, rates and booking windows
May is one of the quieter shoulder months. Daily motorhome rates usually sit well below summer and below the June-July ski-school-holiday period. They can also be softer than Easter and the April school holidays.
NZ school holidays are normally in mid-April, early July, late September and mid-December to late January. May usually sits between those windows, though the first weekend can still catch families if the April break runs late in a particular year.
For Rotorua, book powered sites 1 to 3 weeks ahead for weeknights and 3 to 5 weeks ahead for Friday or Saturday. Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park and Blue Lake Top 10 are easier in May than in January, but late arrivals still get poor pitch choice. If you are crossing Cook Strait later, Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes Picton to Wellington, or about 3.5 hours with loading. In May, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually more realistic than peak-season lead times.
What to do specifically in May
Geothermal sites are at their most atmospheric on cool mornings. Wai-O-Tapu, Te Puia and Waimangu all work well in May because steam hangs low and bus groups are thinner than summer.
- Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest: good walking and mountain biking, but expect damp roots after rain.
- Polynesian Spa or local hot pools: better in cool weather than on a hot January afternoon.
- Hobbiton near Matamata: about 70 km from Rotorua, allow 1 hour 10 minutes each way by motorhome.
- Taupō day run: SH5 is about 80 km and 1 hour, longer if you stop at Huka Falls or geothermal parks.
What to skip? Do not plan long lake swims, late-afternoon hikes, or tight evening drives after a full sightseeing day. Wet roads, glare and early dark make a tired final hour feel longer.
Routes that still make sense from Rotorua in May
The Rotorua + Tongariro loop is the obvious May route if you have 5 to 7 days. Rotorua to Taupō on SH5 is about 80 km and 1 hour. Taupō to National Park or Whakapapa is roughly 100 to 115 km and 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on stops.
Snow chains are not normally needed for Rotorua roads in May. Watch the forecast if you continue toward Tongariro, the Desert Road section of SH1, or higher ski-field access roads late in the month. Our Snow chains in NZ: when you actually need them guide is worth reading if your route includes alpine roads.
The North Island in 10 days route gives you Auckland, Rotorua, Tongariro and Wellington without racing. The Auckland to Rotorua drive is 230 km and realistically 3 to 3.5 hours by motorhome via SH1, SH27 and SH5.
