West Coast in November is late spring. It is green, damp, bright, and usually easier than the Christmas rush. For motorhome travellers, this is one of the better shoulder-season calls if you can accept rain as part of the deal.

Expect 17°C highs and 10°C lows around Hokitika and the glacier towns, with long evenings and fewer full holiday parks than January. What West Coast is like in November

November on the West Coast is not summer yet, but it often feels close by midday. The bush is lush, waterfalls are running, and the glacier valleys at Franz Josef and Fox are open in normal conditions. You still need a rain jacket. This side of the Southern Alps gets weather first, and it changes fast.

It is a good month for the West Coast region if you want less pressure than January. Motorhome daily rates often sit around 20-25% below January levels, depending on vehicle size and pickup city. That is shoulder-season pricing, not winter pricing.

New Zealand drives on the left. If you are coming from Christchurch via SH73 over Arthur's Pass at 920 m, or from Wanaka via SH6 and Haast Pass at 564 m, plan shorter days than the map suggests. Greymouth to Franz Josef is about 175 km and 2 hours 45 minutes in a motorhome without long stops.

Temperature, rain, daylight

Use Hokitika and Franz Josef as the practical weather guide. November averages sit around 17°C by day and 10°C overnight. It can be warmer in sheltered sun and much cooler in the glacier valleys after rain.

Rain is normal here. November is not the wettest month, but the West Coast does not have a truly dry season. Expect alpine showers, heavy bursts, and then clear breaks. If the forecast shows a proper front, move glacier walks and the Hokitika Gorge for the clearer side of it.

Daylight is a big win. Early November has first light around 5:45 a.m. and last light close to 9:10 p.m. By late November, last light is nearer 9:30 p.m. That gives you time to drive SH6, stop at Punakaiki, and still reach Hokitika Holiday Park before dark.

Crowds and pricing in November

November sits between the late-September school holidays and the mid-December school holiday build-up. That matters. Holiday parks fill more slowly than in January, and you can usually travel with a little flexibility from Sunday to Thursday.

Do not treat weekends casually in Franz Josef, Punakaiki, or Hokitika. Two to four weeks ahead is sensible for powered sites if you want a known stop. If you are using the Cook Strait ferry before or after the West Coast, Interislander or Bluebridge between Wellington and Picton takes about 3 hours 20 minutes, or about 3.5 hours with loading. In November, book the ferry several weeks out, longer for Friday-to-Sunday sailings.

Vehicle choice matters on this coast. A 2-berth or compact 4-berth is easier on narrow SH6 sections, petrol station forecourts, and small DOC access roads. A 6-berth gives space, but it is slower through the Otira Gorge and tight at older campground layouts.

What to expect at holiday parks and DOC sites in November

Hokitika Holiday Park is a useful centre point because it breaks the coast neatly between Punakaiki and the glaciers. Around Franz Josef, powered sites are worth lining up early if your dates hit a fine-weather window. Rainy days push more people into powered sites for drying clothes and running heaters.

DOC sites are very usable in November if your vehicle is certified self-contained and you are comfortable without full facilities. Lake Mahinapua Scenic Reserve, Goldsborough, and Gillespies Beach are real options, but check access after heavy rain. Gravel roads and wet grass are the usual issue, not snow.

Freedom camping rules vary by district, and enforcement is tighter in popular coastal towns. Read Freedom camping in NZ and Holiday parks vs DOC campsites before assuming a beach car park is legal. The blue self-containment sticker matters.

Routes that make sense from West Coast in November

For a first South Island trip, the South Island in 14 days route gives the West Coast enough room. Christchurch to Arthur's Pass to Greymouth, then SH6 south to Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Haast, Wanaka and Queenstown is a strong November line.

The South Island in 10 days route can work, but it is tighter. You will need to choose between Punakaiki, Hokitika Gorge, and the glacier stops rather than trying to do all three properly. North to South in 21 days is better if you are crossing from Picton and want Nelson, West Coast, Wanaka, Queenstown, and Mount Cook (Aoraki) without daily long hauls.
