Mid spring — Labour Day weekend (last Mon Oct) is a NZ peak

Wanaka in October is proper spring. The lakefront is waking up, the ski crowds have mostly gone, and the high country still carries snow on the tops. For motorhome travellers it is one of the better shoulder-season months, but it is not empty.

The catch is timing. Early October can overlap with NZ school holidays, and Labour Day weekend, the last Monday in October, behaves like a small summer peak around Wanaka, Queenstown and Central Otago.

What Wanaka is like in October

Wanaka in October suits travellers who want spring light, open roads and fewer people than January. It is not beach weather. It is a layer-up month, with calm lake mornings, windy afternoons and the odd cold front off the Southern Alps.

The town works well as a base for the Wanaka region guide, the South Island in 14 days route, and shorter links like Wanaka to Queenstown or Wanaka to Mount Cook. It also fits the broader October campervan travel page because it shows the classic South Island trade-off: better rates than summer, but less settled weather.

Temperature, rain, daylight

Use 16°C as a typical October high and 5°C as a typical low in Wanaka. Frost is still possible early in the month, especially outside town near Lake Hāwea, Makarora and the Cardrona Valley.

October is not Wanaka's wettest month, but spring alpine showers are expected. Weather can change fast around SH6 to Haast Pass, SH8 over the Lindis Pass at 965 m, and the Crown Range Road at 1,121 m. Snow usually sits above road level by October, but a late cold snap can still affect passes.

Daylight is a big plus. At the start of October, first light is around 6:45 a.m. and last light around 8:25 p.m. By the end of the month it is closer to 5:55 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. That makes relaxed driving days easier.

Labour Day crowds, pricing and places to stay

October is shoulder season for daily hire rates, but Wanaka lifts around weekends. Labour Day weekend is the pressure point. Treat it like a peak mini-window, especially if you want powered sites.

Wanaka TOP 10 Holiday Park and Glendhu Bay Motor Camp can fill faster than visitors expect. Lake Outlet Holiday Park is useful on the north side of town. For simpler DOC-style stays, look at Kidds Bush Reserve near Lake Hāwea or Cameron Flat on SH6 toward Makarora, but check opening status and conditions before relying on them.

If your trip uses the Cook Strait ferry with a campervan, October sailings are not as tight as January, but school holidays and Labour Day still matter. Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes between Picton and Wellington, or closer to 3.5 hours with loading. Book earlier if your sailing date is fixed.

Road access, snow chains and October driving

Most October routes from Wanaka are open, but they are not all equal in a motorhome. Wanaka to Queenstown via the Crown Range is about 70 km and 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in a small vehicle, longer in a larger motorhome. The Cromwell route is about 120 km and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, but easier if the weather is poor.

Wanaka to Mount Cook via SH8 and SH80 is about 205 km and 3 hours in a motorhome. Wanaka to Haast is about 145 km and 2 to 2.5 hours on SH6 over Haast Pass at 564 m. Carry chains only if your rental conditions require them for alpine roads, and read the Snow chains in NZ guide before assuming October means no winter risk.

New Zealand drives on the left. A foreign licence in English is usually valid for 12 months. If it is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or approved translation. Minimum hire age varies, often 18 to 25 depending on operator and vehicle class.

Routes that make sense from Wanaka in October

Wanaka works well inside South Island in 10 days if you keep the driving simple: Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown and back by SH8 or SH1. South Island in 14 days gives you more room for the West Coast, but October rain on SH6 can make glacier stops feel damp and rushed.

The Christchurch to Queenstown route is a clean October choice if you want spring lakes and mountain roads without crossing Cook Strait. The Queenstown plus Fiordland loop is possible too, but allow weather slack for SH94 to Milford Sound and avoid trying to drive Wanaka to Milford in one day.

For vehicle size, a 2-berth or compact 4-berth is easier around the Crown Range, Cardrona and tight holiday-park sites. A 6-berth can work for families, but it is slower on alpine roads and less pleasant in older town parking areas.
