West Coast in October motorhome guide
Mid spring — Labour Day weekend (last Mon Oct) is a NZ peak
October on the West Coast is proper spring: green, wet at times, warmer than winter, and still quiet enough between school holidays and Labour Day weekend. It suits travellers who want glacier country, rainforest walks and SH6 without January traffic.
The trade-off is rain. The Coast is not a dry-region gamble. You plan two-night stops at Franz Josef or Fox Glacier, keep one weather day spare, and watch ferry and holiday-park space around the last Monday in October.

What the West Coast is like in October
West Coast in October sits in shoulder season, but it does not feel empty on long weekends. Average temperatures are about 15°C by day and 8°C overnight around Hokitika, Greymouth, Franz Josef and Fox Glacier. In a campervan that means a heater at night, damp towels, and early starts only if you have decent layers.
Rain is part of the region. October is not the wettest month, but the West Coast has regular spring fronts off the Tasman Sea, and alpine showers are expected near the glaciers. Build your day around short breaks in the weather rather than waiting for a perfect blue-sky forecast.
Daylight is improving fast after daylight saving starts in late September. Around mid-October, first light is roughly 6:10 a.m. and last light is around 8:25 p.m. near Hokitika. By Labour weekend it feels closer to summer, but evenings still cool quickly under the bush canopy.
Roads, passes and ferry pressure in October
SH6 is the spine of the Coast. Nelson to Greymouth is around 290 km and 4.5 to 5 hours without long stops. Greymouth to Franz Josef is 175 km and about 2.5 to 3 hours. Franz Josef to Wanaka via Fox Glacier, Haast Pass at 564 m, Makarora and Lake Hawea is 285 km and usually 4.5 to 5.5 hours in a motorhome.
Snow chains are not normally a West Coast SH6 issue in October, but late snow can affect the alpine exits. Arthur's Pass on SH73 is 920 m and Haast Pass is lower but remote. Check NZTA road conditions before leaving Greymouth, Hokitika, Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. A 6-berth is comfortable on SH6, but slower through the one-lane bridges and narrow rainforest sections south of Fox.
If your October plan starts with the Cook Strait ferry, treat Picton space seriously. Interislander and Bluebridge take about 3 hours 20 minutes between Wellington and Picton, closer to 3.5 hours with loading. For Labour weekend or school-holiday overlap, look 6 to 10 weeks ahead, not the week before.
Crowds and pricing in October
October prices usually sit below summer peak and above the quietest winter weeks. The jump comes around two pressure points: the spring school holidays in late September and early October, and Labour Day weekend, which falls on the last Monday of October. Holiday parks fill faster then, especially if the weather turns good.
For normal October weekdays, a self-contained 2-berth or compact 4-berth gives the easiest West Coast rhythm. You can park more cleanly in supermarket car parks at Greymouth and Hokitika, and you will feel less bulky on side roads to lakes, beaches and glacier viewpoints. Read the vehicle-size guide before assuming a larger van saves the trip.
Book Hokitika Holiday Park, Greymouth holiday parks, or Franz Josef motorhome sites earlier for Labour weekend. Outside those dates, you often have more room to move, but do not rely on freedom camping as the main plan. Use the Freedom camping in NZ guide, and check local council rules because self-containment certification does not make every lay-by legal.
What to do specifically in October
October is good for short, weather-flexible stops. Hokitika Gorge, Lake Kaniere, the West Coast Treetop Walk area, Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and the glacier valley walks all work well if you can move when the rain eases. The rivers run full, the bush is bright, and sandflies are waking up but are usually less fierce than in midsummer.
Glacier heli activities and scenic flights can be excellent in clear spells, but do not plan the whole trip around one fixed morning. Two nights at Franz Josef gives you a much better chance than one. Fox Glacier to Lake Matheson is worth an early or late visit if the cloud lifts off Aoraki/Mount Cook and Tasman.
What would I skip? Long beach days, tight same-day drives from Nelson to Franz Josef, and any plan that crosses from Christchurch to the Coast and back again in 48 hours. The South Island in 14 days route gives the Coast enough space. South Island in 10 days can work, but you need sharper choices.
Routes that make sense from the West Coast in October
The cleanest October routes are north-south rather than out-and-back. Nelson to Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika, Franz Josef, Fox Glacier and Wanaka flows well if you have at least 5 nights on this side of the island. The Greymouth to Franz Josef drive guide and Fox Glacier to Wanaka drive guide are the key legs.
For a full holiday, use South Island in 14 days if you are starting in Christchurch or Queenstown. North to South in 21 days also works well in October, especially if you want Picton, Nelson, the Coast, Wanaka and Queenstown in one line.
