Driving a NZ motorhome in October
October is mid-spring — days past 13 hours by month's end, snow only on high peaks, shoulder motorhome rates, all major routes fully open.
October is one of the best shoulder-season months. Daytime temperatures climb to 12-19°C across the South Island and 15-21°C across the North, daylight stretches past 13 hours, and all major routes (Milford Road, Crown Range, Lindis Pass, Lewis Pass) are reliably snow-free by mid-month. Motorhome rates are 20-30% below peak summer, holiday parks have plenty of availability, and the Cook Strait ferry is bookable 3-4 weeks out without stress.
Weather and what to expect
Variable — settled 4-6 day windows alternating with cold fronts off the Southern Ocean. Daytime swimming temperatures still cold in the south, mild in the north. Most spring rains have passed in October. The Mackenzie Basin and inland Otago are typically dry and stable.
What's special in October
Spring lambs across the countryside. Wildflowers in Wanaka and Arrowtown. Bay of Islands water temperatures climbing through 17°C — dolphins close to shore. South Island roads quiet — most international visitors are still 4-8 weeks away.
Labour Day weekend caveat
Labour Day (fourth Monday of October) and the surrounding long weekend is the first big domestic-travel weekend of spring. Holiday parks in Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Rotorua, Wanaka, Queenstown and Tekapo book up 4-6 weeks ahead. Outside that one weekend, October is open road.
