NZ school holidays — when they fall and what they do to motorhome trips
NZ has four school holiday windows per year — mid-April (2 weeks), mid-July (2 weeks), late September to early October (2 weeks), and mid-December to late January (6 weeks). Each pushes motorhome and holiday-park demand sharply at headline stops.
NZ school holidays are predictable but they're spread differently from northern-hemisphere calendars, and overseas travellers are often surprised by them. The four windows — autumn (mid-April), winter (mid-July), spring (late September to early October), and summer (mid-December to late January) — each push domestic family travel into the same handful of headline destinations, and the impact on motorhome rates and holiday-park availability is real. If your travel dates fall inside a school-holiday window, book early; if they fall outside, you've usually got the country to yourself.
Exact dates by year
Dates shift slightly each year. The Ministry of Education publishes the official calendar 12-18 months ahead. Cross-check your travel dates against the current calendar before committing — a 7-day shift can save NZ$500-1,000 on a 14-night family motorhome trip.
Where school-holiday demand concentrates
Queenstown, Wanaka, Tekapo, Rotorua, Bay of Islands, Coromandel and the West Coast glaciers absorb most of the domestic family demand. Ski-area holiday parks (Methven, Twizel, Ohakune) get hit hard in the July window. Headline stops fill 4-6 weeks ahead during school holidays; quieter side-routes (the Catlins, the East Cape, the Far North) stay open.
Australian school holidays
Two of the four NZ school holiday windows (April and July) overlap with Australian school holidays. Australian families take NZ motorhome trips at those windows in numbers — the Northland and the Coromandel especially fill with Australian-registered rentals. Plan around it the same way as for NZ school holidays.
