NZ motorhome trip in summer — December through February
NZ summer runs December through February. Longest days of the year, peak warmth, peak demand, peak prices, and the busiest holiday parks and ferries. Plan 5-8 months ahead.
Summer in NZ — meteorologically December, January, February — is when most international motorhome travellers visit, and when the country's infrastructure runs hottest. Daylight peaks at 15.5 hours around the December solstice; daytime highs reach 22-28°C across the North Island and 18-25°C on the South Island east coast. The Cook Strait ferry, the motorhome fleet, and the holiday-park network all operate at capacity. The reward is the country at its lightest, warmest and most photogenic; the cost is roughly 25-35% above shoulder pricing across every line item.
When in summer to come
Early December: shoulder rates with summer daylight (the most under-recommended window). Mid-December to 2 January: absolute peak — book everything 5-8 months out. January: peak. Early-to-mid February: peak. Late February: rates starting to ease, holiday parks emptier after the NZ school year resumes.
What to book ahead
Motorhome 5-8 months out. Cook Strait ferry at the same time. Headline-stop holiday parks (Queenstown, Tekapo, Wanaka, Franz Josef, Rotorua, Bay of Islands) 8-12 weeks out for January, 4-6 weeks out for February. Milford day cruise 2-3 weeks out for a specific time slot.
What you'll get for the money
The country at its peak — warm sea, long evenings, dry inland, late sunsets that let you cook dinner outside the motorhome until 9pm. The trade-off is the busiest roads and the fullest holiday parks of the year. If you want summer weather without summer crowds, late February is the sweetest spot of the season.
